All game types now open a modal, showing the various operating system and download type options.  For freeware games it's download link and mirror link, for commercial games it's store page link and demo link.  Each of these types can be repeated per platform.

That was a bug.  Fixed now!

Think I've fixed it?

I've set birthdays to only be listed on the forums index.

https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/temp/Competition_topics.csv <- a list of every topic ever in this forum.  If you can use that to pick out the patterns you want me to narrow down to ('threads containing the word MAGS' etc), then I can do that.  Although some Excel magic might also allow that.
#407
Next step is to rethink the way demos and downloads for commercial games are handled, which would logically tie into this.  Will probably end up with a separate link type for pages that collate other download options.

Or maybe it didn't work for him... or he/she was just trolling because he/she could.  :-\

Yup.  Sometimes there's no obvious cause for a download being marked as broken.  I used to get all those emails, so now I'm shifting the responsibility to the game owners!

That's a bug in the core SMF software, and honestly it's not important enough for me to waste time digging into the hugely complicated logic involved in parsing posts (hundreds of lines of code...).  Sorry, but you'll have to live with it!

Okay, I think this is done now.  Game owners can add a separate download and mirror for each of the five available platforms, said platforms will return in searches, and a popup will appear showing all the downloads and mirros available for a game when you click the 'download x' button.  Oh, and each download and mirror can be reported as broken separately, to help game owners work out what's wrong a bit more easily.

HAUNTED TUNNELS â€" (Looping)
GOOFY GUM â€" (Looping)
GOOFY GUM 2 â€" (Looping)
PUZZLE FRANTIC â€" (Looping)
TRIPPY SPACE TRAVEL â€" (Looping)
GRUNGY FUTURE â€" (Looping)

Just to check was the symbol that's been messed up there (â€") supposed to be "â€"" ?  Or something else?

I noticed myself some time ago that the system will corrupt all the typographic quote marks “…” if I reopen an old post for modification through the small "Modify post" button at the end of a post. But if I reopen the same post with the big “Modify” button at the start of my post, it does not.

This was an unrelated issue, but should now be fixed:

Thanks for the pointer though, I've fixed the weird quotes in post titles and bodies now.

Mittens 2020 will be from Friday 03 - Friday 10 July at Pitchers, Chipping Campden, England.

It's about time we thought about planning this year's Mittens.

As Mittens 2018 was in the US and 2019 in Australia, it was agreed that this year should probably be in Europe.  I thought it might be good to have one last easy-for-Europeans-to-visit Mittens in the UK before the iron Brexit curtain comes down at the end of 2020.  It also will have been 18 years since the last UK Mittens (Mittens #1 in Laleham!), so probably about time for another one!  Tamara and I are booked up later in the year, so would prefer to have this at some point in July.

Given so many people only ever visit London when they come to the UK, I thought it might be nice to see some of the scenery we have to offer.  A few options that spring to mind:

AreaNearest Sizeable airportNearest Distance from London
Lake DistrictManchester / Liverpool5 hours / 280mi
Peak DistrictManchester / Liverpool3 hours / 150mi
CotswoldsBristol / London2 hours / 70mi

All are in/around a National Park, or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with varying degrees of hills/mountains, farmland, forests, and quaint little villages with cobbled streets.  The Cotswolds would probably be the most accessible option overall, given its relative closeness to London and its airports (and the M4 motorway that leads to London).  It could also give us a chance to make daytrips to interesting places like Salisbury (with Stonehenge nearby), or Bath.  I've had a quick look, and there are plenty of rental properties available to match all sizes of group in all areas, from little cottages up to old manor houses.  And of course, being the modern day, Wi-Fi is available in most.

So, any interest?

It's got nothing to do with anything you did, it's to do with a change in the forums database.  It'll work going forward, it's just older posts with any non standard characters will be affected.

It seems like more or less every extended character (typographic, foreign letters, etc.) in every old post has been mangled. Is it not possible to fix this?

If you can give me examples of the mangled characters, and what they should be (i.e. "%$£ should be â,¬"), I can probably fix each instance.  Otherwise, I'm afraid not.
#418
I'm guessing it's “Word style” quotation marks specifically that were affected in this case?  Rather than plain text "s?  I've edited that one post at least to fix the quotes.  Going forward all new instances of those characters should be fine, it's just the existing ones that have been mangled.
#420
I made a change to hopefully support a wider range of 'foreign' characters.  But unfortunately it seems to have mangled some of the existing ones...  You can edit the post to readd whatever characters went wrong, and they should prevail then.
