No, DnB I retouch all the head, and make lines more fine, and all the head view's more fine.

I rework the image with Fireworks MX 2004 and export to .gif with option of 128 color only ( I have the option to work with 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256 colors or custom color palette. I chose 128 fit good for me.

How you calculated 294 colors.
if I copy it in GIF i only use 256. explain to me.
