I decided to create a spreadsheet to split the output from an AGS voice script file into the corresponding filenames and voice lines. I have made this publicly available in case anyone else would find it useful.

A basic familiarity with AGS voice scripts and spreadsheets is assumed, but it's very easy to use and full instructions are contained in the spreadsheet itself.

You can save a copy to your own GDrive or download a copy in Excel / Open Document format, and use from there.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQOuaJ1t2p1wzAUl6tH6Q24oGPWT6fAo7I8puVnvFwneuCarmtBH8J-zTgiyd9BjTxzE08Dadjgw668/pubhtml

I'm finding it pretty useful, especially when sending a voice script out to someone else rather than doing the voicing myself (where I am very used to the filename convention and don't need to think about it much as I go along). Hopefully it will be useful to someone else too. Usually I take the results and copy into a voice script sheet, but there's no reason you couldn't work straight from the spreadsheet itself if you found that easier.

Please note that if you have a character with a few hundred or more voice lines, copy-pasting into another document can take a while.

General Discussion / AGS user "SinSin"

Just wondered if anyone had contact details, maybe an email address? I've tried to contact him via AGS Forums and messaging on Twitter, but no joy. (I was in touch with him previously via these channels but now they're not working, I have no way to get in contact.)

If anyone knows could they please PM the info to me? He was going to voice a character for Captain Disaster and the Two Worlds of Riskara. Thanks.

I'm not likely going to have time to develop this any further and since the game itself is fully playable with 20 levels plus random level generator, I've released it. It's a fun little puzzle game, absolutely no frills (also no sound), but beating all the levels should give you a solid challenge.

For those who've played Snow Problem this is obviously a similar concept, but with water, and levels built on equations instead of hand-crafted. I struggled to optimise the code enough for a realistic water flow effect, but I don't think it's too bad.

Okay, I'm stuck in the bit where you have to re-enter the house to meet John and watch the message on the big TV, but I can't work out how to get rid of the droid. I presume it's something you have to do when it's back is turned, thought that would be the stun gun, but nothing I've tried works. A little pointer please?  :cheesy:

Or at least, that you remember playing?

Mine goes all the way back to 2001!

Just thought it would be fun to compare notes. Probably been done before, but I don't remember seeing anything for a long time.

AGS Games in Production / Flow Problem

No, it's not a urinary complaint, it's a game.

A sequel of sorts to Snow Problem, this time I decided to see if I could make a fluid movement mechanic based on single-pixel colour detection, and then whether I could make that into something resembling a game. After a short failed experiment trying to simply adapt what I made for Snow Problem, I've managed to come up with something that I think feels quite different, and works quite well as a puzzle game. At first I wasn't sure it was going to work but just adding three specific ideas to the game have made it play really well and offer quite varied strategies, as well as some "aurgh!" moments when you haven't done something quite right.

Since it's easier to show than tell, here's a video:

Some screenshots too:

I haven't seen Les around here for a long time and also haven't been able to contact him via GChat. As far as I can tell he's not on Discord.

Is anyone in touch with him in any other way and knows if he's okay?

Yes it's true!! Captain Disaster is back! But, he's as you've never seen him before.

** Demo available on Steam! **

I'm delighted to announce that I have teamed up with Lorenzo of Clotilde fame to make a new Captain Disaster game, with the same daft humour but an all-new graphical style and user interface, while Viking will be creating an original music score for the game - most recently Viking created the superb OST for The Corruption Within.  I will be taking care of coding, design and sound effects while Lorenzo works his magic with the artwork (plus throwing in some dreadful jokes just in case mine aren't bad enough, and probably solving my coding issues!). I won't say anything about his graphics as the screenshots below speak for themselves.

We will also be welcoming back some of the voice acting crew from Stomping Boots while introducing some new voices. TheBitPriest will be part of the project as well, since obviously it wouldn't really be Captain Disaster without my co-dev from Stomping Boots!

Nearer the time I will be recruiting some testers to round off the team.

Captain Disaster and the Two Worlds of Riskara features an epic story in which our hero is not quite so much of a disaster... or is he? Answering a distress call begins a chain of events involving a planet with an amazing history, an attempt to unite two races driven apart for so long that no-one can remember why, and an ancient race thought to be long extinct...

While not exactly a follow-on from Death Has A Million Stomping Boots, there will be allusions to events from it and at least one returning character apart from Zero-Bit and the Captain himself.

Parody has always been an important part of the Captain Disaster DNA, and that's just as true with this games. Books that will definitely have some kind of influence on the game's storyline include Dune, 1984, Ender's Game and Timelike Infinity.

  • Epic story
  • Intriguing characters
  • Gorgeous visuals (1280x720 resolution)
  • Fiendish puzzles
  • Fiendish voice cast
  • Beautiful soundtrack
  • Lots of very, very bad jokes

Marvel at the refitted Disaster Area!

Delight in the aliens you will meet:

Collapse under the weight of sci-fi references hidden in the game (okay, probably hidden in plain sight, but still)...

(Also spend many sleepless nights wondering if this is a typo of a clever corruption of a word...)

Gasp at the dramatic cut-scenes!

Did I mention it's Available to wishlist on Steam now;-D

This game was created for the MAGS August 2022 gamejam by Kastchey and myself.

A short but somewhat challenging point-and-click game with a fantasy setting, based on the theme of "Healing". You play the apprentice of a potion master who is near death after an experimental potion causes catastrophic results. (There may be the odd bug since we didn't have time to do much testing.)

We are looking at possibly expanding this into a much larger game in the future.

Completed Game Announcements / Snow Problem

Now released on Itch - coming to Steam on 7th October 2022

Get it on Itch

(When the Steam version comes out, you will be able to claim a Steam key via the Itch page if you purchased there. Most achievements are likely to be related to saved data so if you have achieved the requirements in the Itch version, you will not need to repeat these requirements to gain the associated Steam achievements.)

Snow Problem is a game in which you collect snow. There are obstacles to stop this being easy of course, so you need to create extra terrain on the game screen to guide the snow to the bottom of the screen. Added some terrain in the wrong place / somewhere that was helpful but isn't any longer? No problem, you can delete it. Oh, and did I mention that there are also different obstacles that will melt your snow?

Many levels contain areas that change the colour of the snow, and you will need to collect a certain amount of each colour to complete the level. As you complete levels, more levels unlock for you to play. The full game will have 100 levels. Every level will be tested by the developer to ensure that it is definitely completable, so if you fail, you know it's your own fault! :-)

You'd think that 100 levels to tease your brain would be quite enough, but no! The game also contains a built-in level editor which will allow you to create up to 100 levels of your own.

The game features 24  pieces of (mostly well-known) classical music  to help you chill out a little while you stress out over how to beat a level.

Playing the game with a mouse is highly recommended, it's designed with precise control in mind which you may find difficult to achieve with a trackpad.

I'll get a game page entry here up soon. In the meantime, thanks to lorenzo and Steven Don (sorry can't remember your AGS handle) for testing, and also CrashPL for pointing out an issue.  ;-D

I came across this recently and it's a really cool idea, I think it's powered by AdventureGamers.com's database. It's a bit "guess it in one" or "would never have got it" but it's still a nice concept.

Basically you have to guess the adventure game from the screenshot, if you fail you get another screenshot, up to 6. It autocompletes game names so you don't have to worry about remembering spelling / exact wording.

Only been playing it for 5 days - twice got it in one, twice failed completely, once got it in 3 (knew the character name but not the specific game).

AGS Games in Production / Snow Problem
Wed 11/05/2022 22:29:24

Continuing my bizarre love of creating anything but adventure games with AGS, I present my latest project - Snow Problem!

This is a puzzle game in which you have to gather snow. Easy you may think, but each level will present obstacles for you to carefully steer your snow around with well placed thingamabobs. The game will feature 100 levels with generally increasing difficulty as you progress, and a built-in level editor to create up to 100 more.

A 12-level demo is available on Itch

The Rat Pack started life as a MAGS game which didn't win that edition of MAGS, but much to my surprise did win "Best Non Adventure Game Created with AGS" in the 2018 edition of the AGS Awards. Even when I started making the MAGS version I had the intention of expanding it into a bigger game, which led me to seeing whether I could create a deep and satisfying turn-based strategy game in which all the commands are available on a single screen. I hope players will conclude that I have succeeded.

Although the game is text-based, Kastchey encouraged me to add some nice shiny artwork to it in terms of the menu screens and events, and I'm very glad he did because they add a lot to the game (and perhaps needless to say, he himself provided the excellent artwork for the game). Real life commitments did slow down the development quite a bit but anyway it's finished now!

Thanks to Durq and Lorenzo for their valuable help with testing.

Onto the game itself...

The Rat Pack is a text-based, turn-based strategy game. As a young rat trying to make your way in the world, you start off with a small commission from King Rat.  By setting up colonies in different locations, completing mission objectives and rising up the ratty echelons  you can eventually hit the big time - but it won't be easy!

Do you have what it takes to be a true leader among rats?

The story is split into 3 Chapters:

Humble Beginnings (well a rat's gotta start somewhere, you know?!)
Moving on Up (Still in the country, but living life lush!)
The Modern Urban Rat (this is it boy, we're moving into the city!  YAY... but beware all the extra humans of course...)

Each Chapter contains 5 Missions with its own specific objectives, as you slowly start from the yuckiest places to grander surroundings.

As you progress through the missions, more options will open up so that eventually you will be juggling many options such as foraging for food, digging to expand your next and food storage area, scavenging for treasure which can then be spent on upgrading your Rat Lab and skills such as Trap Evasion, raiding rival rat colonies, improving your rank by sending to tribute to King Rat, who you can then ask for help.

The Rat Pack (Full Version) is available now on Itch!

(For comparison, this is the main screen for the MAGS game):

Advanced Technical Forum / AGSteam question

Sorry this is a stupid question, but...

If I wanted to have one version of a game that supported Steam achievements, but would also work fine on Itch or anywhere else without having to create two separate builds, would the following code enable this:

Code: ags
#ifdef AGS2Client_VERSION
//DO STEAM STUFF
#endif // AGS2Client

I'm not sure I've fully understood what this function is for - does it simply detect the presence of the plugin and ignore if not found, or does it check if the plugin is active at runtime / that the game is being run from the Steam client?

This is an expansion of my MAGS January 2021 game, 1 or 2 player mayhem trying to gather fishy followers and then keep them away from sharks and nets, whilst you as the leader fish try to evade electric eels and jellyfish. Also featured Endless and Virtual Aquarium modes.

Made for MAGS January 2021 on the theme "Under The Sea", Shoaly You Can't Be Serious is a fast and fun 1 or 2 player arcade game in which you gather as many fish to yourself as possible - but be careful!  Sharks, nets and electric eels will hinder your progress to become the boss fish!

I made it with the intention of creating something my kids would enjoy, but I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoy playing it myself.  ;-D

This one's a bit of a departure for me, working with the dev who made "Void Breach (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1204710/Void_Breach/)" on it.  Provisionally looking at releasing in Q2 of 2021.

The Corruption Within is a psychological thriller first-person point & click adventure game set in the Victorian era.  While there will certainly be puzzles, the emphasis will be on strong story-telling.   You have just enjoyed a camping holiday with your family when your wife and two young children go missing.  With no way to contact anyone you head towards the only source of civilisation for miles around - a grand old mansion by a lake.  You soon find yourself drawn into a bigger mystery while you desperately try to find your family…

We are planning to run a Kickstarter (or some other crowd fundraiser) and details of this will be posted when they are confirmed.

(Posting here because it will be made with Game Maker Studio 2 not AGS.)

With apologies to both Sun Tzu and the Bee Gees, I guess.

I've released a new minimalist retro arcade game - so retro it uses actual rectangles instead of sprites! - but when there are two or three hundred of them bearing down on you at once, I think you'll be less worried about what they look like and more concerned with... well you know, staying alive.

20 levels, 5 game speeds, 2 game modes and a challenge mode to play through all 20 levels if you dare.

I plan to update with new content when I can, and also release on Steam if it seems there would be a reasonable market for it (if I do this, anyone buying on Itch will get a free Steam key of course).

Site & Forum Reports / Can't add new game?
Sat 14/03/2020 21:03:14
Apologies in advance if I've done something stupid!

Trying to add a new game, getting this error:

As far as I can see I haven't left out any information or put in any dodgy data.  The game title now appears twice under "newly added games" but both links result in a 404 error.

With an increasing number of commercial games made with AGS now available, would it be possible to view ONLY commercial games?

Perhaps keeping "Include Commercial Games" but also having "Include Free Games", with the latter being ticked by default?
