Now I´ll have to swallow my words...  :'(

Trapezoid, tell you´re sister that she has (at least) two admirers in this community...  :)

the Great Ones are Great because they don't follow the rules.

Like I said, everything that happens in LOTR is a causal effect of what went before.

It is funny that you start your post with the sentence that says that the Great don´t follow the Rules and you finish it making clear how "restricted" is the LOTR novel by the previous story ^_^

Don´t write your reply so fast!  :) It is clear that you are not talking on the same "rules"
a) Rules as tecniques for making the writing easier
b) Rules previously stablished by your own novels to go on with the plot.

But  IMHO it shows that Tolkien, as all the rest of the greats, follow rules, as the creation of such a complicated World implies a great use of the tecniques you said before. The goal of the Greats is that they follow these rules and they make it unnoticeable during the reading experience.

BTW Ryukage, in spite that this (IMHO) little incongruence in your post has been spotted by me  ;) The reading of your oppinions has been enjoyable, welcome to intelligent newbies members to the forums.

"If one were to try and create a new epic tale at this point, I don't think you could escape it bearing a close resemblance to one or more other stories. If you manage to make it avoid any current epic-style stereotypes, you'd probably have written the most boring tale known to man."

Well... at least, SOME details could change! Most of the artistical fields go in circles since something new happens. I am thinking now in Indiana Jones. In the last crusade we see a film basically focused in the relationshib between Indy and his father, which would have been impossible with the "orphan" classic storyline. I am not saying that Indy will be the reference in the future, but it can be a step.

And yeah! I knew that Tolkien was previous to Star Wars, and I am aware that Lucas created a futuristic adventure deliverately inspired in the classic tale storyline! \o/

I was navigating... And I just find this

It is just one more of the funny stuff you can see in the net, but it shows the lack of imagination of the writers how perfectly works the typical story of the orphan who becomes hero by killing the bad guy at the end... Don´t you think that it is time to change the basic storyline of the epic modern tales?

Notice that this can be made also changing:

Lord of the Rings; synopsis

Frodo Baggins is an orphan living with his uncle
in the remote wilderness of the shire.

He is rescued from boredom by wise, bearded Gandalf, who turns
out to be a wizard.

Gandalf reveals to Frodo that Frodo's uncle was also a ringbearer, and
was the best puzzle solver he had ever seen.

Frodo is also instructed in how not to use the Ring as he too
trains to become a ringbearer.

Frodo has many adventures in Middle-Earth and makes new friends
such as Aragorn and Arwen.

In the course of these adventures he distiguishes himself as a top...
well... he isn't really good at anything, I'll skip this part.

Frodo also sees off the threat of Sauron, who we now know
murdered millions.

In the finale, Frodo and his new friends save the world.

With some of the characters of Star wars.

I do have a question though... could you share how you created that effect of the leaves on the tree?.. I think that looks great and I've always had a problem with trees/shrubs.

Do you mean in the BIG picture? I painted it quite randomly, with a big brush (I think it was a 7 pixels circle) then I resized it (50 %). That makes the noticeable circular shape of the pencil dissapear.

EDIT: Increator has a nice totorial with trees...

Thanks for your comments Pessi... and thanks for the final line, which has made me realize that I haven´t explained which is the system I used for the first image.  :)

Well... It consists in painting over photographs, using big blobs of plain colours over each surface (I.E. the big wall is painted in one colour). It is pretty quick, because in the second image I took attention almost in every pixel (shadow, brick, shadow, anti alising...) It is a steady work...

About the second pic:

PLUS

made the work... As you can see, the original painting was not so cute as the final result... and I consider to use semitransparent pics a hint... and I am ashamed...  :'(

Edit: A new version with new tones of colors and shadows.

Edit: Thanks Neole for the webspace.

Thanks Yak... I see it now that the windows at the end are too big, the feeling of "flat" is real, but I´d never noticed without your help (It´s been kinda like that "magic eye" books).

There is a reason for the great textures and shadows in the second one, I pasted a semitransparent photo, which I think it´s a hint (Thankyou ^Migs^ for saying it is jut a tecnique...). The problem with this is that I won´t probably find photos of all the rooms I want to do.

And SilverHawke... working in the improvements you suggested!!!  :)

Hi people... I have been working on an image last days, you´d probalby seen it in if you´ve been in mIRC. I was not completely satisfied (at all, in fact)... I prefered to make it in my style, is spite of trying to get the Lucas´ early 90´s style... Now it is your turn, what do you think?

here is the previous attemps, but have in mind that it is unfinished. I´d preffer if you critisize the first one, thought...

Edit: I was working in the second one for one week, the first lasted two days...

My advise is not to take a lot of time for the screens, we´re not professionals, and, whereas our autocritic concept is big, the users of the game won´t see anything bad with the painting in most of the ocassions.

What I do is to put a time limit per screen, let´s say a week, which is a lot (Implies a year of working for a medium game), and I don´t go any further if I can´t get what I want. That´s a way for not stucking the games production.

here are some stars you can randomly add...

There´s no secret in the stars... It is just a little of work, but they will work for all the screens with skies in the game.

There must be two tones of blue for the stars I did... If not, it is a matter of the "JPGation"

I see nothing bad with the tree...  ???

Wow... It really reminds me the Commandos graphics... They´re perfect, as the correction of the little "mistakes" (I.E. the branches of some trees seem a little bit artificial) wouldn´t add a GREAT improvement to the image, actually, if this system works, go on with it.
#3973
AWESOME... I don´t like the sky and the moon, as you said, but I´ll tell how to do them tomorrow... I must go to the bed, here in my country is fuckign late. Be sure to check my edit, you´ve got future!!!

SKYTUTORIAL

Well... we make a layer with the sky, and we paint it in black... (Rolling stones, yeah!)

1)We add random noise to this layer... we convert it into two colours, getting that the lighter spots become white, and the sky black. Using the constrast and brightness tool can help if we loss ALL the stars during the converssion

2)We floodfill the transparent space, which has become white, with black.

We use the filters to get the white spots become blue.

We can repeat the process one or two times, to get differnent tones of blue stars layers.

3)We paste the stars layers and we add some big and spectacular ones randomly. Remember that black has to be the transparent colour.

We GOT IT!!!

I see the new one better, excepts for nostalgics (Which is sometimes a point to have in mind sometimes) In addition, the first one has some tecnical problems, he is taller in north and south view than in the side one...

LGM sais that MI4 is not bad, which implies it is good.

I´ve been accused in other forums to say that MI4 sucks because it´s "fashioned".

Now I´ve gave my reasons. I´d like to read his.
