I'm not accusing anyone, but can I please see this entry so that I can form an opinion on it? So far all I've seen is one screenshot and one empty 20-byte zipfile.

(because if this was a joke, I did that years ago... :P )

'Laura Bow 3: The Manhattan Murders' & 'Laura Bow: The Colonel's Bequest Resurrection' have both been canceled.

Are you keeping track of who's doing remakes or fangames of Sierra classics? If so, do you please have a list somewhere?

Since we're discussing MAGs so thoroughly, I have a question: What if I wanted to tell a story in an existing series, but used all new assets to tell it?

I feel that should be okay - I did a RON game for MAGS a couple years ago (when the theme was not RON-related), and nobody objected to that.

Well, the company who made Laura Bow made their last adventure game somewhere around 1995, so it's pretty safe to say that they won't be doing it.

Fangames? Ah, I don't think the series was ever that popular, and as such I don't recall any serious attempts at fangames for it. So as far as I know, no. Feel free to start one yourself, of course.

Both ideas are bad and you should feel bad.

Awww, now you've made me feel bad. You should feel bad about that!

I think people are talking past each other here.

There's the past "P3n1s" award, and there's a hypothetical award for the best joke game. These are not the same thing.

Several people are suggesting the latter would be a good idea (I haven't seen many objections). Several other people are claiming that the former, basically the yearly worst-game award, would be a bad idea (and I haven't seen many objections to that, either). It's just that people are talking about two wholly different things.

It's quite possible that there still isn't a consensus for a joke game category; but let's just be clear on the fact that nobody's suggesting to bring back the p3n1s.

Ok, it seems that more than few people want the Best Tutorial or Documentation award back! So I've added it to the 2011 AGS Awards categories.

Thank you. What about Best Joke Game, though? Are we seriously still so afraid of that five-year-old controversy that we'll never ever touch that category again? I recall asking the same question last year and not getting an answer either.

a = a + 1 is perfectly valid syntax in pretty much every language i know of.

The entire C family of languages (which includes Java, PHP, and AGS) uses = for assignment and == for comparison. Pascal uses : = for assignment and = for comparison. BASIC is confusing in that it uses = for both.

At any rate, yes, this is one reason why math majors tend not to like CS majors. Another is that CS grads make much more money :P

Oh wait, I thought it's the Indiana Rodent game. Indiana Jones is soooo 80s.
:P

Anyway, glad to hear the FOYâ,,¢ project is still going strong.

No, the hamburger is a red herring.  Did you find the fifth floor code or just guess it?

Ah, do I get points for reading that code? Ok, that would explain it.

I've completed the game but am missing two points; any idea what optional thing I may have missed?

Is there any point to
Spoiler
the hamburger?

Okay, I've PM'ed both. Hm, maybe I should just resubmit my game, but then we get two entries in the database and that's also not good...

Okay, I was in a hurry when I posted this, so I've now edited the first post with an actual blurb and more screenshots. Enjoy :)

Watch the Let's Play video!

For your consideration: Indiana Rodent (Raiders of the Lost Cheese), the biggest platform game ever written for AGS. In particular, think of the technical difficulties in creating a tile engine in AGS, with eight-way scrolling and parallax background, using the Arcade Adventure Game Studio for a decidedly non-adventurey approach. Furthermore, for the retro fans, it has great chiptune music by several composers.

The game started as part of this year's One Room One Week, where it was voted Best Programming and Best Music. It has since evolved with better jump physics, greatly improved graphics, more enemies, and most importantly, more and larger levels. It includes a boss enemy, as well as secrets and unlockables. If you want, download the old version and compare it to the current.

See this thread for details. The full game is part of the AGS Bake Sale, so only a demo is available for download.

Four out of five mice recommend this game for

  • Best Non-Adventure Game
  • Best Programming
  • Most Tasty Cheese

You're seriously using MediaFire for a file less than a kilobyte in size? :P

There was some talk in december about bringing back the joke game and manual categories - both classics of the AGS Awards, and removed in recent years. What about them? There was a shortage of game manuals last year, but surely that doesn't mean we'll never get an award for manuals again? There was a controversy about the joke game award several years ago, but surely we're all past that now and can laugh again at such games as Me Go Store and Oceanspirit Dennis?

How about letting the community vote on whether they like having these classic categories?

#1, hands down.

I really dislike verb coins - they're so slow to control, and the writers tend to forget to put in  keyboard shortcuts.

One-button(?) interface (Telltale's Sam 'n' Max(?))
If you need an example here, I tend to use one-button interfaces for my adventure games, e.g. Warthogs and Quasar.
