I grew in a Catholic family and was a good Christian until I really read the Bible and saw really how primitive and naive were the foundations of what was my ethic, my guide to life.

Declaring I didn't believe "all that bullshit", politeness in not my virtue, only brought me many discussions and problems at home and school. It was a religious school too.

I started looking different sources making  own errors, taking own conclusions to elaborate my ethic, one I could believe. It was a hard job, and after all the mess I have more or less the same ethics as my parents.

And not only that, I can do nothing to stop a President bombing peoples houses 'cos God told' him.

So kids, don't read. You'll only suffer more.

Trying to understand what can lead to such absurd, I checked my ignorance about Estonia against Wikipedia.

The History of Estonia is an endless succession of invasions by Germany, Sweden, Russia, Denmark, Poland... Who not?

Liberation? What an euphemism, Estonia was sequentially invaded by two totalitarian empires after agreeing it on a paper, that was a really bad place to be during WWII. I am surprised you even are able to keep your own language.

General Discussion / Re: AGS Guiness Records

There's no proper record book without "the biggest", and the winner is:

La Gran Castanya by Arnau Bernat, wih 160 MB!

I think it's also the only AGS game in Catalan, so 2 awards for La Gran Castanya.

Si s'ha de fer es fa ben gran. Tu si que saps Arnau!

Now, as far as I can remember there is a way to put your name out of every database

This "no-ads" list is different in each country, where are you now?

I didn't understand well what's the status of bicyle and your implication in the project, sorry. I set an email to the contact in whois database.

But I have been thinking a bit more in this AGS games repository idea. So, the problems to solve are:

- Guarantee availability of games.
- Allow complex link combinations for a single game

What if...

You probably know Archive.org:

The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an Internet library, with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format.

They also have a software section:

The Software Archive is designed to preserve and provide access to all kinds of rare or difficult to find, legally downloadable software titles and background information on those titles.
The collection includes a broad range of software related materials including shareware, freeware, video news releases about software titles, speed runs of actual software game play, previews and promos for software games, high-score and skill replays of various game genres, and the art of filmmaking with real-time computer game engines.

They mention "rare or difficult to find", but in the music section they are accepting also demos. Besides, they might be interested in hosting AGS games collection:

If you have a large collection of related items in single media type, like a radio show for example, please contact the Internet Archive. You can email our collections staff at info at archive.org. Be sure to include the details of your collection; we want to know how many items you have, what format they are in as well as any general information you can give us about the collection.

The page for the download is shocking the first time you see it, but it is well organized and offers many possibilities, more than enough to host cases like Soviet U-dorf and Kings Quest (if well done even in a way that a stupid bot would understand), so only one link would be necessary in this AGS database.

A quite complex example:
http://www.archive.org/details/leisure-suit-larry-3-amiga

I can't talk in the name of AGS, but maybe an email to know more isn't silly. CJ?

Once I tried mirroring games automatically but people use all sorts of awkward non bot friendly hosting services (rapidsharealikes) or link to their websites, so it wasn't very effective.

In Goddess I'm solving this by adding manually a direct link to the file in the database, but that's very slow and doesn't work in all cases. Even if I improved the script to support most common file services, aiming for 100% this way is crazy. I could also try to sell this problem as an advantage: "Goddess: handpicked AGS games".

Related to fall back mirror idea: c|_| torrent tracker could be also a good source, but doesn't seem very active now. I see that it was proposed also that the link to the torrent could be included in AGS database.

To fit all this in AGS games database, the best would be something like "add as much links you want and use any combination of these tags: FILE - OS - PROTOCOL"

DOWNLOADS for SuperBigGame:
* Game (basic) - Windows - HTTP
* Extra: Voice - Any OS - HTTP
* Extra: Music - Any OS - HTTP

DOWNLOADS for ManyVersionsGame:
* Game (complete) - Windows - Bittorent
* Game (complete) - Linux - Bittorent
* Game (complete) - Mac - Bittorent

Is it getting too complicated? Most of the games would use just one "Game (complete) - Windows - HTTP".
Anyway, current two links seem to fall short, no?

I hope this goes here.

Problem:
There are almost 300 games in AGS database that can't be blessed now by Goddess because none of the mirror links points directly to a file.

This can be because:
- The link is dead.
- It points to the game's website.
- It point's to a file hosting service with an odd method to serve files.

Sometimes linking to the website is necessary because AGS database doesn't fit. Soviet U...dorf is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. King Quest saga goes in separated downloads: game, voice and music

Proposals to AGS:

- Test regularly AGS database for dead links. If you are interested I could extract part of Goddess code to make a standalone link checker, but there are probably better tools for this already.
- Allow 4 basic mirrors: DOS, Windows, Mac OS X or GNU/Linux.
- Add 2 extra mirrors: Voice or Music.

Edited: another proposal later

I think this would fit for all.

Proposals to Game Makers:
- Use the mirror for the last version of the game and include all the translations in the file.
- Unless you do want to stop users with tools like Goddess, avoid hosting your game in places with countdowns, "copy this text here", and similar obstacles.

Does it make sense to you?

Jessica Plunkenstein:
:'( In Linux it quits after the intro (Any hint anyone?)

Cirque de Zale:
Bad? You are offering jobs to people and they only complain (grumble grumble grumble) Well, OK, maybe the contract of the children could have been done a bit better.

Alice:
I actually had this game but only played a bit because... why? It was cool. Where's that CD now? I need it!

And then name a band that does not intimidate someone else or sound like something before it.

Even something as extravagant as Lordi (Finland 1992) has evident antecedents, like GWar (Virginia 1985) or all those spectacle bands of the 80es like Kiss (New York 1973).

I think that Kiss is a horrible name for a band like Kiss, it's easy to say and remember, but it doesn't fit to the music as well as Black Sabbath (UK 1968) Iron Maiden (UK 1975), Motörhead (UK 1975) Mayhem (Norway 1984), In Flames (Sweden 1990), or Children of Bodom (Finland 1993). Even Opeth (Sweden 1990) is a better name

By the way, Mystery Machine makes Heavy Metal or we are stealing the thread?

Why do you wanna be a bad girl, Tartalo?

Because in a male dominant game scene where you mostly have to be good, these games are a delightful raritie that I enjoy specially and... something from my childhood the Dr. is researching.

Did you think that genres only inspired people on the continent where it was invented?

Many (most?) of the important bands in the origins of Heavy Metal were British.

And i think a name is indeed important, but Mystery Machine doesn't sound that bad.

In Spooks you play a bad-ish girl who also happens to be dead.
I forgot that! Maybe because it's progression, but it starts truly in darkness.

I enjoyed Emily Enough and Principles of Evil, in both you have to be a "bad girl".

Do you know of any other in the same line?

I don't really understand the benefits of stencyl over say game maker 7 after reading the requirements.

Stencyl will be cross-platform (that's what I understand) and will have a BSD license.

This is what they say (Stencyl):
Quote
How does Stencyl differ from Game Maker?
Stencyl differs from Game Maker in the respect that it does away entirely with the need to script or define specific entity behavior thanks to the Kits. Kits define how all entities behave, and because of those users, just place an entity. This approach has many advantages and also some drawbacks, but we believe that the unique advantages outweigh the drawbacks.

But for a real comparison we'll have to wait

Quote from: Radiant
given that they have five "basic templates" and require no programming, will it perhaps simply result in a large number of levels for otherwise-mostly-identical platformers and so forth? I wonder.

In the FAQs they mention you need no programming to make new games but you do to make new Kits, so it seems the door is open for creativity. How open? I wonder too.

Stencyl will be a game maker with platform games in mind and a BSD license.

In May they will release some games and Stencyl itself won't be out until end of summer but the expectation is so high they had to open the forums:

Shit! I forgot my <joking> tags!
Now I am serious, check my signature, do you think I would do that if I didn't like adventure games? Have a bit of sense of humor please.

Hi, I don't usually listen to Prog but liked your demo. Some parts seemed better achieved than others, but looking at it as something unfinished the feeling was that it went the good way.
