I think all the contests should be rather short to get the sudden burst of creativity out of people fast. Long deadlines aren't as helpful for people as some might think. Still, what do I know? I'm no musician and never have entered this specific contest.

I personally am sick and tired of adventure game puzzles. It's always nice to see something different developed with AGS.
#223
I thought it was hilarious.

This may or may not be what you're after but Radiant is making something similiar: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=35463.0

So yes, absolutely possible. But then again, nowadays, almost anything with AGS is. :)

That's some really exciting stuff you have there, Rahakasvi! I can hardly wait to see more!

Haddas is just totally jealous because his game characters aren't as hot as yours. I'd totally do your character, but alas. I can't. Because she's not real therefore one shouldn't be turned on by her. This makes me very very sad.

One way to do this is using overlays. You can learn more about them in the AGS manual. You could also create an invisible puppet character, which you can place somewhere in  the room. Then you can make him say "RING, RING, RING" and the text will appear where the character is situated. This is a bit easier to do than overlays but less organized in the editor. In the game itself there is no difference.

There are really a bunch of other ways to do this, like making your own GUI that you can use for all kinds of similiar text effects but that's probably too much hassle if you only need this for the alarm clock.

ExpressCard/54? (what's this?)

I believe that's some sort of slot where you can add some external card. Like and additional USB port and such but I'm not sure.

The Extensa seems like a very decent laptop for its price. I think the graphics card is good for some light gaming too. And Verkkokauppa is a reliable store so you have my blessing.

Important to me is the ability to play speech sounds from custom scripting, and not just from the Say command

Yes, I agree. This is an issue that has been bothering me when I've wanted to create my own speech scripts too.

Date proposition! Haddas and I have been chatting and decided the following dates could be good for Lapaset 2009.

Interesting idea for an interface. :)

I'm having a little trouble with the symbols for yes and no. How about simply using the basic checkbox v and x? And I think the symbol for sick is too easy to interpret as dead. Not sure what you could do about that... I suggest you give the guy in "make" a hammer to hold, to symbolise actually building/creating something.

Otherwise I do think it's pretty intuitive. I assume the player will be given directions on how to use them.

What's wrong with the idea of a sexy lady parole officer?

Nothing wrong with that, but Spider is a 13.

Therefore not being old enough to even be on parole. This game is confusing.

General Discussion / Re: Snow!

I'm surrounded by snow every single day of my life. Well, not exactly but it's not far from it.

And I hate it...

I was thinking along the lines of Harry Potter and HHGTTG, where most or some names are changed. But sure, it's possible that it's only a problem for perfectionists such as myself.

Unfortunately these guidelines will be difficult for those who want to make the game in English but have read books translated to a language that is not English. The names of people and places and well known phrases in books are often translated and sometimes greatly modified, which means that you'd have to read the original version of the book first in order to make an accurate game out of it. I for one can't read a book AND make a game in one month. But hopefully too many people won't encounter this problem.

The following post contains outdated information. Sadly Lapaset 2009 is actually cancelled.

Last year people seemed to be busy with all sortsa stuff so Lapaset failed to be arranged. Well, it's gonna be back this year, assuming enough people are interested.

To those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, Lapaset is the Finnish equivalent for Mittens. It's an AGS meeting that was first arranged in 2006 by Haddas in his home in Liljendal and the following year it was co-hosted by Visy and Tuomas in Tampere. It is not yet confirmed but it's likely to be arranged in Liljendal again this year. It has been confirmed! Lapaset 2009 will be held in Liljendal, Finland.

Most Finnish regulars and some folks from outside of Finland have already shown keen interest in going this year. Anyone is welcome! If you want to join the fun please post in this topic! I will gather a list of all the confirmed attendees in this post. You can also post any questions you might have.

Date: Monday, 8th June - Sunday, 14th June
Place: Liljendal, Finland. Haddas' parents' house.

Discuss! :D

@pablo- I never used "belief". This is no religious thread, so I wonder you're posting here. I said I THINK. (nah, just kidding) (or am I?)

It is too a religious thread! Who do you think you are, disagreeing with the amazingly well justified opinions I posted here? You may not have used the word "belief" as such but you sure as hell thought of it! God, the nerve of some people...

That is pretty cool! I like the concept so I'll probably get the game when it's done. Good going, Dave!

I just took a quick glance but here are some things...

The problem I have with it is that it's hard to focus on anything. Or rather find what you're supposed to focus on. My advice for you is to use less fancy javascript/flash gadgets. Moving text and animation is hardly ever such a good thing in websites. It would probably suit this sort of party-themed website if not overused. Right now there's just too much movement. So work on that.

I do like the colors and how they complement each other. The basic layout works well.

I also noticed the English language button does not work. I get a pop up text saying "U PRIPREMI". If that's supposed to say "coming soon" or "not working" or something similiar, it probably should say so in English.

It's certainly not bad, just needs some work in some aspects. :)
