Hints & Tips / Trash Quest
Sat 03/12/2022 14:26:15
A small joke game from a RuMAGS competition way back. Anyway, the database page entry says there are supposed to be six endings. I've only found one, which was getting killed.

Have anyone completed this one?

Hints & Tips / Of the Essence achievements
Sat 13/08/2022 12:36:22
I'm playing Wham's old MAGS game Of the Essence. According to the game's wiki page, there are 8 achievements available. I've only managed three:

Tapdancer
Spoiler
By "finding" a mine field.
[close]
Unlucky
Spoiler
Probably by getting hit by shrapnel while under cover.
[close]
How did you do that!?
Spoiler
I'm not sure, but probably by progressing to the second base. I got this before finishing the game.
[close]

Have anyone managed to find more of them? Come on, join the hunt!

MAGS entry with the theme "masquerade".

Database entry: https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2624-masquerade-at-the-con

The game is made by using free assets, including some inventory items from the AGS trove. Thanks, guys!  ;-D

In the first part, the screen is full of mystery people, and you can talk to them or examine them in order to guess who they are. After you reveal their identities, you need to help the good guys and defeat the baddies in traditional first person point and click style. Have fun!

Hints & Tips / Hello Neighbor!

I've been playing this and manage to get five of the six trophies. But the last trophy (number two) eludes me. I read in another thread it's called
Spoiler
Fast clicker.

Have anyone got this trophy and know how to get it? My one idea has been to
Spoiler
click fast enough that everyone is looking out their window at the same time,

but I haven't been able to do that. I'm not sure if it's possible or if I'm just too slow. Any help would be appreciated.

Hints & Tips / House of Horror
Fri 08/04/2022 19:09:08
I realize it's a long shot, but I'm stuck in a 2009 ags game/demo called House of Horror.

In story mode, I need the combination to the safe.
Spoiler
Have found a shelf with numbers that may or may not correspond to colours. There are colour patterns on shelves, paintings and inside a tv, yet it's not clear to me how I'm supposed to think to be able to even determine how many digits the code is.

In arcade mode, I run out of bullets before I manage to kill the boss, and I wonder if there is some trick to it that I haven't discovered.

As the in-production thread got locked, I guess I'll have to post here. I absolutely loved this! Great graphics and animation, lovely voicing and a story that dragged me right in. The world seems so alive, with all those other creatures going about their business in the background.

Have you ever wasted your time trying to solve some cryptic puzzle in a game, and then it turns out it can't be solved? I thought it would be nice with a thread where we can name the games that are unfinishable, either because they are buggy, or that they are designed like that. Some joke games may take their humour from making the game unwinnable, but wasting the players' time by being vague about it is just unnecessary, in my view.

Ever since being caught in a never-ending loop in The Fabulous Wanda on the Commodore 64, I've felt this isn't really funny for the player, but rather a disappointment. Now, there may well be some play value in a buggy game, but it would be nice to know when to stop trying. Likewise with demos without a scripted ending. So let's help each other out, shall we?

Pixely Pete (MAGS 2001-07) seems to lack an ending.

Hints & Tips / Time Quest 2
Sat 05/03/2022 14:09:16
...And I'm stuck in the sequel/parody, as well.  :(

The last thing I did was to get the picture of granny's late husband. Now I can't seem to figure out what to do next.

Hints & Tips / Time Quest

I got the amulet and travelled back in time, but now there seems to be no more to do in the game. Is there an ending? Is there more, or is that the "end" of the story?

Marion doesn't only post games here, but she's got a ton of CYO-AGS games on her site that are French only. But last night I thought...what if...?

So I started up Legende d'Eikos while downloading a Google Translate Camera app on my smartphone. Then I pointed the phone's camera at the text on screen, scanned it and got instant translations. I played/read through the entire game that way.

Now, this can't replace a proper translation. The text shifts as the translation AI tries to make sense of it, and when I fail to hold my phone level (or still), it's all over the place. My camera would frequently read " l' " as a t, for instance. The writing won't be as good either, but the meaning comes across. I found that this worked okay with Marion's game, as the text stays on screen for a long time, and much of the story is told through the images (her being a graphic novel artist). I won't get the same experience reading the descriptions, but I will understand the options I can choose from.

I understand that this tech isn't new, but for me, it's science fiction.

Seeing as there are a few games in this series already, I thought perhaps it would be fun to share some thoughts and ideas among us who have played one or more of the games.

The Wandering Wizard lists the series as The Occultist - Old Growth, Heart of Abraxas, The Town on the Edge of Darkness, The thirty-first, Julia and the lost game The Secret of Drom Bennacht.

He does not include Alpha X Tech Demo or Alpha X - Project: Smash
However:
Spoiler
These games take place in the future, after a catastrophic event which have destroyed all records of what happened. It's probably not intended to be a part of the Esper series, but one could easily make a theory that this may be the future of the Esper timeline, or perhaps a possible future.

Here are some of my thoughts after playing The Occultist - Old Growth:
Spoiler
There is a huge evil entity that the occultist doesn't defeat in this game. While the player may defeat the large demon, it's hinted that there is a huge, cognizing fungus growing underneath the entire wood, making it an evil place somehow. But can this entity possibly communicate with other evils in the series? Perhaps by commandeering demons or wraiths? It's unclear to me what this entity wants to do, what its project is.

There is also some unanswered questions. There seems to have been a demonic cult in the tower and the surrounding area. Are they all dead? Are the shadow wraiths hanging from trees showing us that the evil made them all kill themselves? If so, who maintains the tower? And the shed? Of course, these may merely be plot holes, but where's the fun in discussing that?  ;)

Feel free to chime in.

Completed Game Announcements / Prep Time
Sun 13/02/2022 16:05:47
So, have you wondered how it is Batman spends his prep time? Peek behind the curtains in this joke game!

Prep Time

by heltenjon
Music by Eric Matyas
Graphics by various meme artists (I've attempted to credit them, but the origins aren't always easy to find.)

This is something in the middle ground between a joke game and a fan boy game. Not to be taken very seriously. Gameplay is entirely through dialogue.

Hints & Tips / Sopor Eterno (Eternal Torpor)

I'm playing the English version. I need help finding the password to the laptop.
Spoiler
I assume the notes from the books are supposed to help me, but they are in Spanish. Even after translating them, I have no clue what they mean.

Getting the Picture
by heltenjon, with music by my daughter Ingrid (12)
Some of the original art by famous painters whom I can't credit here without spoiling the quiz.

For the most part, this is a quiz game. Get it here: https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2599-getting-the-picture/

I made this for MAGS January ("Get the picture"), but didn't make the deadline. The game includes the usual silliness and gags. Can you find the secret level?

Enjoy!

Halloween with an Unexpected Guest is a MAGS entry for MAGS October 2021, where the theme was: "Halloween with an unexpected guest". Oh well. Should fit the subject, at least.

The game has a silly story based on what toys I could find in my kids' rooms that somewhat touched the Halloween concept. I posed the toys, took pictures and coded and wrote the story based on them.

See how the Spades celebrate Halloween! What's really in the King's big blue cup? Who nicked the candy? Who is the unexpected guest? And try to find the good joke among all the bad ones.

Hints & Tips / Lost on Cow Island Demo
Wed 20/10/2021 02:44:49
I finally managed to clear enough space on my HD to play the demo of Lost on Cow Island. But now I wonder if I have downloaded some in-between version by accident.
When I couldn't find more to do, I checked the walkthrough text file that came along inside the zip file. Curiously, this file doesn't correspond with the demo I'm playing. There are no matches in the room next to the farmer, nor is there a pipe in the horse's trailer. Additionally, it looks like the walkthrough suggests that the demo ends after talking to the goth girl and the Venus Flytrap. It doesn't. The first time I entered the shop, the girl wasn't there at all. (Or I didn't notice her, but I don't really believe that.) It's possible to go further and talk to the assayer in the jewelry shop on the next screen.

Does this make any sense? Have I got a demo version without an ending? Have anyone played this and finished it?

Hints & Tips / Jump! Jack! Flash!
Sat 28/08/2021 12:09:39
I'm playing through the games of an old MAGS and got stuck on Jump! Jack! Flash! by Kumpel.

Now, the thing is that the game isn't in the database. I found it on The AGS Depository. The old mags thread tells me that the game was updated some times, so I can't really tell if the version I've got is the one playable through to the end, but I hope so. Good game so far!

I have managed to get gas for my car, but now I need to get a car battery. There is one in sight, but I don't know how to get it.

I also need to make a wrench of sorts in order to open the hood of my car. I guess I need to
Spoiler
combine the bottle opener with the pen, so that I need some wire or duct tape or similar.
[close]
I think I need to find more items. In my inventory I currently hold: wallet, gas can, pen, bottle opener (I think it is that).

I thought perhaps such a thread could be of use, like the opposite of the Gameseek thread.

Some AGS games are not added to the database, and may fly under people's radar. If you find something that other people may be interested in, why not post the link in this thread? This could be stuff hidden in plain sight in the AGS depository on archive.org, or it may be jam games, demos or smaller games that for some reason haven't ended up in the database on this site.

I'll go first: In the Adventure Jam 2021 on GameJolt, you can find the following AGS games not currently in the database:

Nadir is a great and moody short piece set in a submarine.

Long in the Tooth is a short demo with marvelous graphics and animation.

Coffin Valley is a western game.

All Demons must go to Hell is a game announcing itself as user-unfriendly, but it's quite fun to play.

Hints & Tips / Essence of imagination
Tue 10/08/2021 01:37:39
I'm stuck at the repressed dreams where there are buttons on the wall and stones on the floor beneath them. I passed the first room, but have no clue about the order of button pushes in the second. Am I supposed to brute force it?

Edit: This is while playing as a sea otter.
