The internet is finally paying off!

That's great news - I'm a fan of PS and AGS and adventure games so this is like a dream come true - but I'm a little puzzled about how the actual implementation will be done. Well, wait and see, I guess.

Will scripting on PS3_AGS be the same as on the PC or will it be much more difficult?

Unfortunately, the PS3's multi-core processor will inevitably make coding more difficult. Game developers may have to cut down on complex puzzles and sophisticated stories that are simply too hard to program. However, the increase in graphics rendering capability and multimedia performance will more than make up for the inconvenience. This is great news for AGS!

This is why I bankrolled Scotch's help a couple of years ago, I knew back then an evolution to console was in the works (admittedly, I didn't think it was going to be to our new-found friends at Sony).  He's studying some kind of code based crapola at uni at the moment, and he owes me a holiday.  It's either program for my shiny new PS3 or send me to Canada.  As a fellow tight-wad, I know which he'll pick.  Expect a game by the end of the year. "PS3"n15h award, here we "come".

Etc.

Tasteless as that was... ROFL!  ;D

edit: I only just noticed the implications of the sixaxis (sorry, brain is particularly sluggish this morning). So is there support for the sixaxis?? That would be completely awesome. And what about good old gun controllers? Can we incorporate FPS in adventure games too?

I tried the gun-dealie for the PS2.  I hope our little corner of gaming survives without having to resort to "point at screen and press button".

Hope, but not expect.

Sadly.

EDIT:

Tasteless as it was, I'm glad someone got it.  Kudos, my dear.

Actually, the reason why I was asking is that I don't particularly like the controls on console adventure games. The gun controller is the closest to a mouse for consoles: you have a cursor on screen, and you can move it around freely. Quite literally "point and click". And it would mean that tense action moments can be incorporated seamlessly. The timed action sequence is a staple of adventure games... you know what I mean, those short tense moments where you have like 3 seconds to press a tiny little button or shoot a faraway target to stop the end of the world (or at least the death of your character). With a gun controller, these action scenes could be better integrated. I think so, anyway.

Either that or I have a fetish for guns. Probably both.

Most of the PnC games I've enjoyed, have been more about the puzzles than anything. (This could change with Drugs Bust).  Even so, they've still been story driven.  Action-esque reflexes haven't played a great part since Space Quest V.

Sure, the VGA remake of SQ1 had those reflexes, but I never finished that.

I prefer the non-death, "think about it, no, think a bit harder" style of gameplay that Lucasarts has offered in the past.  It's just my apathetic attitude to everything kicking in again, I think.

I can understand the possible need for an timed action sequence now and then, as long as there's some kind of warning beforehand.  IE, you're a cop, there's a timed shooting range you've been ordered to go to. NOT, you're a cop, it's thursday, SHOOT 25 HEADSHOTS in 30 seconds or be suspended.  I'd like to prepare for an "exciting" section, personally.  (SQ1 = get on bike/ride bike around stuff - not - get to planet be on bike dodging stuff).

EDIT:

Fetish for Guns?  We should totally hook up. I have a fetish for people.

Sure, I'm not saying to turn AGS into shoot-em-ups (although there's nothing wrong with that, given the number of RPGs that are being made with AGS even now). I agree with all that you said about puzzles being more important in adventure games than action sequences. It's just that with AGS going to console, I'm suggesting that the gun controller is more intuitive than the usual game pad controller to an adventure gamer who's used to a mouse, since it works basically in the same point-and-click way. It just has the added bonus of being in the shape of a gun, so people who might want to include these action sequences could do so seamlessly. Also, it does mean that adventure games need some rethinking.

We're talking about the possibility of the revival of the adventure game genre to a generation of PS3 gamers whose closest experiences with adventure games are stuff like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, not to mention those other Nintendo-based adventure games that were being discussed in the other thread. I think we AGSers have to start thinking about different ways of designing adventure games. The old rules of more puzzles, less action etc. still hold for PC-based games, but we might want to start thinking about a new set of rules for PS3-AGS games, that allow for more action-oriented gameplay while still retaining the puzzle element as the defining feature of the adventure game genre.

So you're saying that the Insult Swordfighting in Monkey Island wasn't the shizznits?
I'm composing the music for this game:

As much as the Console-Gun-Thing might be close to a mouse, I think we've got the chance to completely revolutionise the "Point and Click" genre with a next/next gen console port.  The possiblities with more than just the vertical and the horizontal as controlling axis alone has blown the genre wide open.  It's not just point and click, it's at the very least "think, point then click".

Of course, that sort of depends on whether AGS PS3 will really support that sixaxis thingy.

So will it?? Someone?? Anyone??

I certainly hope it does.
Can someone link me to Sony's official press release?

It's already Sunday here in Japan, so the press release probably won't be updated on Sony's official site until tomorrow morning when the business day starts.  Just be patient.

I don't know much about consoles, but I understand this is big news.

I mean, a thread has to be special when it got posts by Esseb, Pesty AND Ghormak in it.

Japan? I thought the contract was with Sony Europe. The Japanese site wouldn't have it. So we'd have to wait till Monday England time (if I'm not wrong, the Europe branch of Sony's Playstation entertainment arm is based in England).
