The biggest issue I have is it doesn't really feel like the ship crashed there.  It feels more like it was just placed there.  There's no impact crater, debris, etc.

I did a rather dirty paint-over to illustrate my point:

- added sand 'piles' to show impact (probably should be bigger depending on force of the impact)
- added damage/crumpling to the haul of the ship to show the force of impact
- added some sand piling to the front rock structure (others had done previously)
- added more shading to the rocks around the ship to (I feel) better reflect the light source (based on the lighting on the ship)

Hope it helps!

edit Ilyich's edit does a great job on the sand!

I've been pushin' my agenda over in the bat/cow/goat-cave so I'll mention it here to (though I agree we should wait for Chris to weigh in here);

My thoughts are to make the (admittedly huge) effort to enable AGS to export games to HTML5/javascript.  This would enable the games to be played on ALL platforms (including iOS (iPhone/Pads) and Linux as well) as long as that platform has a modern HTML5 compatible web-browser.

It would be a lot of work, sure, but it would essentially give AGS games to the world :)

Server admin stuff is not my area of expertise!  Not only that but my biggest problem (the reason I'm not making a game for the bake sale) is free time!  I have none these days it seems.

But I do love the idea of deputies ... giving somebody else a modicum of control to prevent bottle necks when Chris isn't available!

I wouldn't mind being involved in the website revamp part though ... even if just a small part :)

Quote from: Ponch on Sun 23/10/2011 03:52:19Thanks Dualnames! You're a great guy, no matter what terrible things Darth says about you.  ;)

I do have a reputation to uphold you know :)

I wish more than anything (well, almost anything) that I could take part in this!  I might still take a stab at something tiny just to contribute!  Considering my last (and only) game was released in 2004!

I was getting used to those leather pants...

THE MENU FOR THE NEW & IMPROVED AGS BAKE SALE!
Your guide to all the great games for sale at this charity event

The AGS Bake Sale Bundle Official Website
www.AGSBakeSale.com

A lot of people are hard at work making games for the AGS Bake Sale. Many of them have already posted previews of their work in the Games In Progress forum, with more new ones popping up all the time. Keeping track of what's out there is sure to become trickier as time goes on, so this sticky (graciously provided by Darth Mandarb -- I guess he's not as evil as I thought he was!) will collect links to all the game threads in one handy place.

So feel free to look around and see if there's anything you like being offered. The bake sale will happen in January (Jan 15), with all the games collected in a single bundle and offered at a "pay what you like" price. The money raised will be donated to Child's Play, a fantastic charity that seeks to enrich the lives of unfortunate children in hospitals around the world. And Child's Play is a charity that is uniquely suited to gamers like us, as it is funded almost entirely by gamers and the videogame industry.

For those of you keeping score, you may have noticed that this isn't our original goal. But as it turned out, CJ didn't want or need the server we hoped to buy for him. And while there were lots of other causes we could have raised money for, helping sick kids was the one charity that we could all agree was the best goal to strive for. And, really, is there a more worthy cause for us to dedicate our time and money towards than children who need our help? (Answer: Of course there isn't! :) )

Remember, AGS Community: We began this entire endeavor for you guys and there's no way we can make this bake sale a success without your help. So please, when the time comes, dig the coins out of your sofas and pay a little money to download the AGS Bake Sale Bundle. Together, we can help a bunch of sick kids and in doings so, make our cozy little corner of the web an even better place to spend time.

Thanks,

The Members of the AGS Bake Sale

This thread is not about The Forgotten Element... let's stay on topic.

Let's stay on target here people...

Quote from: Ponch on Sat 22/10/2011 06:39:57When you post your game in the "Games in Production" forum, please include the "BAKE SALE" tag in the title. (And please only announce a game for the bake sale if you're fairly certain you will actually be able make a complete game by the deadline.)

And, above all else, make sure it complies with the forum rules!!  </sith>

Glad to see you guys finally announce the secret... I can finally take off these leather pants and get back to wearing speedos like normal people do.

Let me know when you want to make that sticky thread we discussed (if you still want) and we'll get it done!

Sounds like "Livin' After Midnight" by Judas Priest to me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hShH4mzp-io&feature=fvsr

It's a bit of a stretch ... but that was what popped into my head!

edit - just listened to your second link (w/ drums) ... I'm pretty sure this is it now :)

Dig the new style...

You might want to consider updating the first post with the new screens.  It's not necessary (by the rules) but might be more helpful to newcomers to the thread!

Perhaps keep links to the old and mention the overhaul... something like that!

Just a suggestion.  Glad to know this is still cooking!

It is very simple.  But that's not a bad thing!

I did a very (and I do mean VERY) quick little touch-up to offer up some ideas to keep it simple, but just punch it up a bit:

- altered the background color and added a very subtle fade/gradient
- touched up the logo a bit and added a slight drop shadow
- pulled the tagline up under the logo (the spacing was off a bit before)
- nav I changed but only slightly
- I played a bit with the fonts (using impact) but in your final product make sure all fonts match (mine don't!)
- I corrected the margins/padding of the main content area (you have text going right up to the divider)
- I punched up the side content box (added a gradient and made it a grey color instead)

I didn't have a lot of time so there's more I'd like to have done ... alas, the clock dictates this was all I could do!

I hope it helps!

I don't understand how anybody can actually believe the end is coming this (or next) week.

The Mayans clearly outlined 21 December 2012 as the end.

And they believed the people before them were made of leaves ... so how could they have been wrong?

Somebody needs to tell this Camping fellow (and his followers) to chill out and have a beer.  They have over a year to go.

I'm kind of curious about this myself...

I think it must be okay to use a likeness of something (at least in some cases) because I get t-shirts (regularly) from a site that always has stuff from Firefly, Star Wars, etc. but it doesn't say "Star Wars" or "Firefly" but would just an image of Serenity (without saying Serenity) and they seem to get away with it.

http://riptapparel.com/shirt/10/10/2011/pizza-the-hut
http://riptapparel.com/shirt/09/30/2011/the-futures-so-bright-i-gotta-wear-shades
http://riptapparel.com/shirt/08/04/2011/pinstripe-serenity

Or another example:
http://riptapparel.com/shirt/08/24/2011/real-og

It doesn't say "Goonies" it says "Goonie"

I'm not sure if this site has to pay licensing but I'm guessing not considering how cheap each shirt is.  So it seems like making it appear like copyrighted material is okay?

Don't hold me to that (obviously!) I'm just speculating!

General Discussion / Re: payment options?
Sun 16/10/2011 15:16:45
PayPal has an API you can use that will make it "invisible" to the end-user.  Meaning they won't visually see the payment being processed on another site.  It will appear that they are staying on your site.  I'm not sure how PayPal works on your side of the globe but I find it to be the best 'starting out' way to go.  In the states if you pay for a merchant account for a start-up company you often end up paying so much for the merchant account setup, then the SSL (secure server), etc and then each transaction rapes you so at the end of the day you make no money.

Short version; I'd recommend PayPal's API ... they aren't too complicated!

DISCLAIMER: I haven't used PayPal's APIs in years so my knowledge of them may be a tad out-dated!

Okay ... I was being lenient but this has gone too far.  This is not the Critics Lounge.

steptoe if you want/need advice on the graphics please post in the critics lounge.  Otherwise let's get back on target in here.

General Discussion / Re: iOS5 Issue...
Fri 14/10/2011 14:50:00
Quote from: LeKhris on Fri 14/10/2011 10:40:23Blind guess: they're incompatible with iOS 5, which is detected by iOS/iTunes and therefore not copied.
Not very likely I guess, but looking at a similar situation with Firefox and Add Ons every time I switch to the latest version, maybe that's it.
A good blind guess 'cause that was my initial thought as well (had the same issue(s) with Firefox as well).  I checked the compatibly of the apps and they are good to go in iOS5.

Quote from: OneDollar on Fri 14/10/2011 13:21:02If you go onto the App Store (on the iPad), go to the purchased menu and switch to 'Not On This iPad' do they show there? If so you should be able to redownload them
This was the next thing I tried... but I was hesitant to do it because I assumed (turns out incorrectly) that it wouldn't have all the stored data from the apps.  After a few hours of desperation I tried it anyway (on a less important app) and it pulled in the stored data as well (guess the iCloud is good for something!)

Thanks for the help fellas!

Since the issue is resolved I wonder if we could/should turn the topic to iOS5?

What does everybody (who is using it) think?

Pros
  • the notifications bar was a much needed feature (even if it's a virtual clone of the android one it's nice to see apple doing the copying for a change!)  It's great to have one area to check instead of bouncing all over the place as before
  • text macros are VERY cool... you can also use them to stop autocorrect from changing words you commonly type.  Tarah was cooking dinner last night and I took her phone and added a macro for "lol" and made its phrase, "I like shagging farm animals" so the next time she replies to a txt with lol (which she does often) it's going to send that phrase instead.
  • iMessage - I cannot stand the way the cell providers rape us for text msgs which cost them nothing.  iMessage is a step in the right direction to stop the criminal (and yes I mean criminal) activity of the cell providers.  Seriously... research it.  It will infuriate you to know you're being hit with over a 10,000% markup on text messaging.
  • lock screen access to the camera is finally here and they made the volume up button the shutter release as well.  Both are much needed improvements

Cons
  • iMessage can be a little glitchy and if you send a group message unless ALL are on iOS5 it just reverts to SMS.  Understandable "why"... just annoying
  • Notifications feel a tad 'rushed' and I've found a few apps just don't trigger it like they should.  Still not a major gripe
  • iMessage (on the iPad) has no real convenient way to tie into your phone's iMEssage and requires an email to be sent to you in order to receive it.  Again, understandable (the iPad isn't a phone), but still annoying to necessitate another contact number/email.

My only major hesitancy is iCloud... I mean for things like the app restoring mentioned above I think it's great but I'm still just not comfortable storing my personal stuff (emails, photos, files, etc) on Apple's servers.  I think an awesome choice would be to be able to set up your own iCloud (on a server in your house) and your iDevice could store/access data from it instead of Apple's servers.  I just don't want my private files under somebody else's eyes.  I think this is the one part of cloud computing I'm just never going to be on board with.

I have searched the interwebs quite a bit to see if anybody else has this issue but I seem only able to find "close" issues but nobody has the same issue (well I found one place where a fellow had the EXACT problem but, of course, there were no replies to the question).

So I thought I'd turn to my AGS pals and see if there are any iTunes/iDevice gurus 'round these parts that might be able to solve the issue;

I updated my iPad and iPhone to iOS5.  Everything went smoothly and I'm loving most of the new features (the text macros are aces and iMessage is a very nice new feature to stick it the carriers that RAPE us for texting charges... but that's a whole other story).

Anyway... on my iPad when it did the 'restore' after all the updates were done it only put some of my apps back on the thing.  The rest are still in iTunes, just sitting there taunting me, but it simply will not put them back on the iPad and I can't find any way to accomplish this.

The show up in the "Apps" tab in iTunes but I can't transfer/drag/drop nothing.

Anybody know how to get them back on the iPad?
#1298
Hate to hear of the stall but have no doubt you'll get back to it!  When you do (and need/want to update us on it) let me know and I'll unlock it!
Unlock'd!

On the one hand I'm pumped this is happening... on the other hand I detest the new graphical style choice.

I agree with abstauber.  When I saw Anchorman the first time I thought, it's a movie version of LSL!!

I would never talk about any secret society that might (but doesn't) exist even if I did know about it (which I don't).

Your secret (if it exists, which it doesn't) would be safe with me even if it were (which it isn't) necessary.
