AGS World Cup Prediction League 2014View Spreadsheet and League Table (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1h70m3EghSdHXZ6s4RkJIRLoQoccWeDa4I9RwkL5twZg/edit?usp=sharing)Welcome to the first (I think) AGS World Cup prediction League.
World Cup fever is nearly upon us, and suddenly we're all armchair experts.
Well why don't you put your proverbial money where your proverbial mouth is and become the proverbial World Cup Prediction Champion 2014
The way it will work is simply this: you predict the scores and earn points. The person with the most points at the end of the tournament wins the League.
There are some rules, however. Please read them carefully:
(in spoiler tags to save space)Spoiler
Rules
(1) I will start taking predictions for the 48 group stage games from the moment I post the thread in AGS and will continue to accept predictions for group stage games until after all teams have played two games (namely, June 22 is your last chance to submit predictions for group stage games).
(2) The League will be closed to new participants on June 22. This is to allow for late comers, though obviously you may not submit predictions for games that have already been played, but it is still worth joining even if you join late, because points in later rounds are worth more.
(3a) Scoring will work like this for each game:
If you predict the correct RESULT you score one point*
If you predict the correct SCORE you score three points**
if you FAIL to make a correct prediction you score nil points
If you FAIL to submit a prediction for a game before the game's kick-off time, you will LOSE one point***
*RESULT here means correctly predicting the winning team or correctly predicting a tie/draw.
**SCORE here means correctly predicting the actual scoreline.
***You will not be penalised for the games you missed if you joined late, but once you join you will be expected to submit a prediction for all future games, and will be deducted one point for each game you fail to make a prediction for.
(3b)During the knockout stages all points are DOUBLED (so two points for correct RESULT and six points for correct SCORE). For the FINAL all points will be TRIPLED (three for RESULT and nine for SCORE). I hope this will add some excitement.
(3c) The winner will be the person who has the most points after the final game of the World Cup is played on July 13th 2014.
(i) If in the event of a tie after all games have been played, the number of overall correct scores predicted will decided the winner.
(ii) If there is still a tie, the number of overall correct results predicted will determine the winner.
(iii) If, there is still a tie, the participant with the fewest deductions will be the winner.
(iv) If there is still a tie, then the participant who joined first will be the winner (namely, the person who submitted their predictions to me earliest). And if, for some rason that STILL doesn't determine a winner then they will be crowned joint champions (no, not champions of pot smoking).
(4a) How you submit your predictions is up to you, you can do all 48 group stage games now, before the tournament starts, or you can do them in drips and drabs. Though, the more you do in one batch the easier the data will be for me to manage. Ideally, you'll submit a nice full list of 48 predictions before the tournament even starts, though this is not a rule.
(4b) Please bear in mind that each prediction must be submitted before the relevant game kicks off, so it is probably wise to get them done early. And please remember rule (2).
(5) The latter knockout stages are, for obvious reasons, closed to predictions during the majority of the group stage. However, you may start submitting predictions for the outcomes of knockout stage games from the moment the fixture is decided up until the game's kick-off time. I will prompt for relevant predictions when the time comes.
(6) A submission is considered 'submitted' if it has been posted in the AGS thread OR PM'ed to me. The former will be better if you want to share your predictions with other people, although they will all be visible on the Spreadsheet for anyone to see. To reiterate, The AGS thread and AGS Private Message are the only two ways to submit predictions. Predictions received by any other means will not count.
(7) Once you have submitted a prediction for a game, it cannot be changed (unless you can convince me there is an extremely good reason for doing so).
(8a) When submitting predctions please use the following format:
Date k/oTime TeamA * v * TeamB
swapping the dashes (*) for the number of goals you think each team will score. For example:
Jun 15 2300 England 3 - 1 Italy
Jun 16 0200 Ivory Coast 5 - 2 Japan
(8b) Please use the template provided in Spoiler Tags in the first post of the thread. It will help you make your predictions more quickly and easily and it will help me to see them and manage them more efficiently. If possible please refrain from using BOLD tags for anything other than the predictions themselves.
(9) Only results after normal time count (90 mins + time added on). Goals scored during extra time or penalties will not be included. So, if you predicted a 1-1 draw and the game goes on to extra tme and finishes 2-1, you will still win the points provided the score at the regular full-time whistle was 1-1.
I will be maintaining the spreadsheet and league table on a publicly viewable document. I will also keep the league table in this first post as updated as possible, though I won't always be able to update things straight away. But rest assured, if you submitted a valid prediction before its deadline, it will count, even if you can't see it reflected in the spreadsheet yet. It just means I'm probably asleep or at work. I'm in the Japanese time-zone through this, so please bear with me.
Please use the template below for posting your predictions:

This is one of the happiest days while being an AGSer: football is on topic! Great one Stu!
I'm in,
here's my first predictions:
Jun-12 2100 Brazil 2 - 1 Croatia
Jun-13 1700 Mexico 1 - 1 Cameroon
Jun-13 2000 Spain 2 - 2 Netherlands
Jun-13 2300 Chile 1 - 0 Australia
Well, I'm glad someone's happy. Thanks for starting us of Miguel.
Not all AGSers are football fans, but it's a bit of fun anyone can join in. If I can get 10-20 people to join in, I'll be happy.
Okay, let's give this a try...
Jun-12 2100 Brazil 4 - 2 Croatia
Jun-13 1700 Mexico 2 - 0 Cameroon
Jun-13 2000 Spain 1 - 3 Netherlands
Jun-13 2300 Chile 3 - 0 Australia
Going for some bigger scores here! :-D
Phew...I expect Spain to start on the bad side but 3 goals against?

I dunno... I just get the impression that their time is up. I could, of course, be sensationally wrong! :-D :-D
I believe you're right but 3 goals...anyway it's cool to watch Stu fixing his board while we talk football, LIVE!
Thanks Cap'n. Your predictions are in.
Don't worry about all the random numbers and stuff. I'm just leaving them there for a few days so people can kind of see how the scoring works.
By the way? can you guys see the tab for the League Table? There should be three sheets, Main, League Table, and Rules. But when I tried checking on a diferent browser I could only see the first one. Do I have to provide a different link for other sheets?
I can see all three tabs (main, league and rules). Using Firefox.
Ahh okay great. IE really is as crap as people say.
It really is! :cheesy:
Works fine in Chrome.

It works fine in IE 11 for me (http://www.smilies.4-user.de/include/Tiere/smilie_tier_216.gif)

Ahh, yeah, in fairness it is IE8. It's my girlfriend's computer and it doesn't look like she's ever updated it.
Will you be partaking, Tabata?

Are you being partisan or is that a genuine prediction? ;)
Anyone else in? I guess you're all just giving it a good ponder before submitting.
We'll need more than two to make it a 'league' (nod)
Devs and Football don't really mix, I suppose? Or maybe people are "afraid" of revealing their thoughts? If so then it's a dumb thing because we're all but sofa coaches here,
Here's more results from me:
Jun-14 1700 Colombia 1 - 1 Greece
Jun-14 2000 Uruguay 3 - 1 Costa Rica
Jun-14 2300 England 1 - 1 Italy
Jun-15 0200 Côte d'Ivoire 2 - 0 Japan
Nah I'm just legitimately WAY too lazy to give out that many predictions! :)
4 at a time, DKH, you have until the 22th to post your predictions.

Good Idea, Stupot.

Thanks Sinitrena. That's the spirit! Those predictions look pretty sound to me. (nod)
Soccer, or "Foot Hockey" as it is properly called in Canada, is still a bit of an enigma to me (although I do coach an under 4 team.... :-\ ). Basically there's a lot of duck-duck-goose, searching for ladybugs in the grass, and the occasional mad dash to stop a "runner" from making it to the parking lot. ;-D Based on this wealth of soccer experience I figure I am well qualified to randomly fill out the betting form and hope for the best. :=

Ahh, in that case I should amend the rules:
(11) If, as has been foretold, a game is to end in a - - draw, hesowhoever that correctly predictimated the score, shall receive a bonus --- points, thus automatically simultaneously winning and losing the league and any other league for the next - years.
Sounds fun!

Any more for any more?
I'd love to get at least ten of us. So far we are seven.
You only have to do a few for now to get the ball rolling, if the prospect of sitting there making 48 predictions in one hit is too daunting or troublesome. Even I myself have only done half of them so far.
Or if you really don't want to do it, why not Tweet about it or something in case someone missed the thread. :-D
And remember its nit too late to join, even after the World Cup has started. You can join any time up until June 22nd and won't be penalized for fames you missed before joining.
I would like to enjoy this, sound very funny :)

Ahh wow Cassie, Cat, Selmiak and Khris, you suddenly got the fever. Welcome.
I'll import your predictions later but for now I've updated all data for the Brazil/Croatia (3-1) opener and it's very exciting indeed! Sinitrena and Cat are sitting at the top of the table with three points each for getting the correct score, while Selmiak and Khris are yet to get on the scoresheet. Everyone else has one point for guessing that Brazil would win.
To be fair I think Sintrena and Cat bought the ref. (roll)
Croatia were closer to get a second goal than Brazil to get their third, but that's football. The winner of this match is not a surprise at all, but it was difficult and Croatia knows how to and plays some good football.
Based on sophisticated statistical analysis of some of the earlier entries, here are my predictions:
12-Jun Brazil 3 vs 1 Croatia (just kidding, it should have been 2 vs 0 according to the analysis)
13-Jun Mexico 1 vs 0 Cameroon
13-Jun Spain 1 vs 1 Netherlands
13-Jun Chile 1 vs 0 Australia
14-Jun Colombia 1 vs 1 Greece
14-Jun Uruguay 2 vs 0 Costa Rica
14-Jun England 1 vs 1 Italy
14-Jun Côte d'Ivoire 1 vs 0 Japan
15-Jun Switzerland 1 vs 0 Equador
15-Jun France 3 vs 1 Honduras
15-Jun Argentina 2 vs 0 Bosnia-Herzegovina
16-Jun Germany 2 vs 1 Portugal
16-Jun Iran 1 vs 2 Nigeria
16-Jun Ghana 2 vs 1 USA
17-Jun Belgium 2 vs 1 Algeria
17-Jun Brazil 3 vs 1 Mexico
17-Jun Russia 2 vs 0 Korea
18-Jun Australia 1 vs 3 Netherlands
18-Jun Spain 2 vs 1 Chile
18-Jun Cameroon 1 vs 2 Croatia
19-Jun Colombia 2 vs 1 Côte d'Ivoire
19-Jun Uruguay 2 vs 2 England
19-Jun Japan 1 vs 1 Greece
20-Jun Italy 2 vs 0 Costa Rica
20-Jun Switzerland 1 vs 2 France
20-Jun Honduras 1 vs 1 Equador
21-Jun Argentina 3 vs 1 Iran
21-Jun Germany 2 vs 1 Ghana
21-Jun Nigeria 2 vs 1 Bosnia-Herzegovina
22-Jun Belgium 2 vs 2 Russia
22-Jun Korea 1 vs 1 Algeria
22-Jun USA 1 vs 3 Portugal
23-Jun Netherlands 2 vs 1 Chile
23-Jun Australia 1 vs 3 Spain
23-Jun Cameroon 1 vs 2 Brazil
23-Jun Croatia 1 vs 1 Mexico
24-Jun Italy 2 vs 1 Uruguay
24-Jun Costa Rica 1 vs 2 England
24-Jun Japan 1 vs 2 Colombia
24-Jun Greece 1 vs 1 Côte d'Ivoire
25-Jun Nigeria 1 vs 3 Argentina
25-Jun Bosnia-Herzegovina 1 vs 1 Iran
25-Jun Honduras 0 vs 1 Switzerland
25-Jun Equador 1 vs 2 France
26-Jun Portugal 2 vs 1 Ghana
26-Jun USA 1 vs 3 Germany
26-Jun Korea 1 vs 2 Belgium
26-Jun Algeria 1 vs 2 Russia
Cheers Monkey424. You're in :-)
They have four refs, and video, and all kinds of technical help, and they still get it wrong in a big, almost game-deciding way like that. That's why I don't like it (the sport in general).
Jun-13 1700 Mexico 1 - 0 Cameroon
Jun-13 2000 Spain 3 - 1 Netherlands
Jun-13 2300 Chile 1 - 1 Australia
I agree, certainly a World Cup deserves the best in technological ways of providing a just result. Fifa doesn't agree though.
Speaking about the "fake" penalty, I think that the player Fred should be the one to blame for fooling the referee. I believe the ref is not corrupt and that he was fooled to give that penalty.
If the first two games are anything to go by, there'll be more discussion about the bad officiating than the football itself. :(
EDIT - YESSS!! Spain 1 - 3 Holland! Stay that way, stay that way... 8-)
Ha! In your face, predictions!
At least I get A SINGLE POINT for predicting the outcome... again... but not extra points for the score... again! :-\
Would love to see Holland win it this year. They always seem to promise much but not deliver... maybe this is their time! (If not them, would like to see someone like Chile or Belgium win, though my gut feeling is that Argentina will win it.)

I don't think I've ever heard of those... are those cities, or are they some kind of food?
I don't know about Chili or Belgy Anne but Mexico sure plays some good football. :=
Well, after four games, 15 goals, and umpteen terrible refereeing decisions, this is shaping up to be a controversial World Cup full of hurt and dissapointment for everyone. The beautiful game.
Currently, Sinitrena is still leading with 8 points, Cat is now second with 6, CaptainD and Monkey424 are on 4 points apiece, but Monkey takes third because he has correctly guessed the most scorelines (Sorry Cap'n, I'm rewarding accuracy). Everyone else is on three or two, so all current players are up and running! But it's still not too late to join if you haven't already.
I'd also like to see Netherlands take it. They're one team I've really enjoyed watching most of my life, more so than England, anyway :-/ But I also think Argentina stand a good chance. Not sure about Chilgium though.
@Radiant - It seems you've got the fever  Why don't you join in, mate. The more the merrier.
Go Netherlands!

As for Argentina, I find it hard to believe they'll take the cup on Brazilian soil, with all the people booing them. If it will happen, it will be devastating for the Brazilians, I think.
Jun-14 1700 Colombia 1 - 0 Greece
Jun-14 2000 Uruguay 2 - 0 Costa Rica
Jun-14 2300 England 3 - 1 Italy
Thanks Khris. Be aware that the Japan game kicks off at 02:00 British time, shortly after the England game finishes, so you might want to do that one too in case you miss it. Cat, you should too. That's a result of me putting the times in British Time so it looks like the Japan game is the next day, but it's not. Sorry about that. It's the only time in the whole tournament that happens, though.
Van Persie's header will be one of the tournaments best goals for sure. What a goal, that's poetry in movement! Only a Dutch striker (remember V.Basten?) could do it! And Robben? Poor Casillas (where's Nacho when we need him?)!
Right, thanks for the hint, Stu.

Actually, I thought more about that:

Wow... my predictions for today's matches were about as far out as they possibly could have been! 8-0
Haha, none of us got a single point from that Uruguay game. Well done Costa Rica.
Totally unexpected!
As for Italy beating England, well, nothing new, really. Italy has tons of experience and are very pragmatic. This said I think there's a great England Team on the making. It takes guts to put up a team with so many young talents.
Yeah, England played pretty well, I thought. Italy were just a bit better. England had so many corners that we should have turned a couple of them into goals.
I was disappointed from England, both by Gerrard and Rooney :-\
I would have expected much more from both of them
But I am glad that my country has won the first match
The last Pirlo's free-kick was sensational, unfortunately took the crossbar 8-0
That Pirlo's free-kick was something special! The ball changes direction mid-air! He told in his biography that he learned it from Juninho Pernambucano.
True, both of them are masters of set pieces!
I also seen many time in past that changes direction from Roberto Carlos da Silva.
But he is completely unique.
After 3 days and 8 games.
Sinitrena is still leading depite scoring nothing today. However, CaptainD follows closely in second, again only behind on 'scores'. Myself and Vincent also scored nothing today and are still on only two points apiece :(
I have terrible internet signal problems and it took me over half an hour to finally get this image on here, so I will probably only do it once every few days.
Jun-15 1700 Switzerland 1 - 2 Equador
Jun-15 2000 France 2 - 0 Honduras
Jun-15 2300 Argentina 3 - 1 Bosnia-Herzegovina
Edit: Stupot, I can post daily screenshots of the league table for you, if you want.
You could also add this to your opening post and I'll keep updating it:

Apart from the cross, Rooney wasn't good, and Gerrard wasn't up to his normal standard. Henderson looked awesome for the first quarter of an hour but then faded. Johnson didn't impress but then again all the threat from Italy came from the other side so maybe defensively he did okay. Never thought I'd say this but Welbeck was good. Stirling and Studge were lively. First full match I've seen for a long time, and it was pretty entertaining. (Plus of course it was the only result I've actually got spot on so far!!)

Great memories from Roberto Carlos! He hit the ball really hard and that's what made the ball go so erratic.
Captain, England had to take some experienced players like Gerrard to kind of be the coach extension on the pitch. What I find pretty bad is Rooney's fitness! He's fat and not that old to be moving around like a tank.
Would like to see Barkley starting instead of Rooney next match. Precocious young talent.
Stirling is pretty good as well, fantastic to see such a light-weight carrying England's game.
I'm an LFC fan so Stirling's brilliance is not new to me! :-D Mind you he's a completely different player this season. Would love to see Rickie Lambert in action too. But for now just happy with the Swiss' late winner seeing me earn another point in this here league.
Yesterday night I was really afraid of that guy! Stirling is a terrific player. So fast. you had to shoot him to stop him.
Anyway... We won again! but it was a nice game, very balanced, excellent opponents. :-D

Stop it... that guy freaks me out.
Now come on France... I said you'd put 6 past Honduras. Of course I've only got the scoreline right ONCE so far...
Hahahaha! Balotelli could have scored a fantastic goal as well!
Anyway, my predictions aren't really famous so far but I love the world cup, any world cup!
Oh come on France. If you refuse to score 3 more in 4 minutes to get me the extra points, at least score one more or let one in to stop Sinitrena pulling away from me! :P
Oh, come on, Captain, at least you got way more results right than I in the last few games. ;) And besides, Cat's leading at the moment, if I'm not mistaken.
I missed this one by just a goal, I feel my luck is turning!
@Sinitrena - you're probably (almost definitely!) right, just getting annoyed that I keep getting the results right but never the scoreline!! :-D
Yep, it's Cat on 12, Sinitrena on 11, and El Capitan on 10... With myself propping up the table on a whopping 3.
Will Cat get her hat-trick of the day in the Argentina game?
2 - 0 ...that's gonna upend the leaderboard :)
Edit: 10 seconds later: 2 - 1
Man, I was sooooo close to getting the 1-1 tie for the Switzerland-Ecuador game: damned Helvetian injury time heroics! :P
Hahaha, I don't get a lot of winners right, but if I do, I do the full monty :P
Because no-one has said it yet, I'm going to say it...
Football is a funny old game.
And old gamers are funny.

Jun-16 2000 Iran 1 - 2 Nigeria

Sorry for barging in: couldn't resist!
Great Germany, Amazing Match ! ;-D
Yay, woke up I my first three points of the tournament. No longer in last place.
@Adeel - why don't you join in mate. It's still not too late :-)
Khris has been working on a way to make the spreadsheet a lot more automated so once I get to a real computer I'll get that going, but for now the scores are updated on the old, manual version.
Well today's matches have certainly seen the gap between top and bottom of the table reduced! There's really not much in it now. 8-)

Khris and Ghost: great match and a well deserved win. We weren't simply capable of anything, really. Also, I apologise for Pepe's stupidity.
It was really embarrassing for me, never expected that Portugal wouldn't fight for the ball possession and played so damn slow. Our prima donna didn't really care to run as well and instead of motivating the rest of the players as a captain he did the opposite.
Well, it couldn't get any worse.

Thanks to some cracking work by Khris, the league table should be constantly up do date, now.

It won't look any different from where you're sitting, but it makes my job a hell of a lot quicker. If it all works, I should only need to input the predictions and scores of each game and then the various formulae should take care of the rest.
Thanks Khris :)
Nice work guys. :)
Yeah, nice work...
Thanks Stupot & Khris for making it so clear that I'm the last on the list! :embarrassed: You and those fancy technologies!

Haha, well according to the rules I guess you would technically trump Tzachs and Haggis because you joined before them... But that's more for deciding a winner if two or more people were joint at the top at the end.
Originally the rankings were for instance 1, 2, 3, 3, 5 in case of a tie between 3rd and 4th. This kills the ordered table though, and I found a neat trick to force a rank by googling this issue, but it puts players further down in the list on top. I'll look into it.
Anyway, we aren't even through the first round of the group stages, so nothing's set in stone. I guess we'll see some nice comebacks and others suddenly drop, like every world cup.
Still, Ronaldo should definitely focus more on playing a team sport and less on posture and make-up, I guess :-D

You weren't in time for the kick off of the Spain match I'm afraid, but I'll enter the rest for you now.
Khris chose a bad time to start trusting in the Spanish... (well, it seems that way atm!)
Yeah, I don't think they'll turn this around.
I think this will be a no-score game for all of us :-/
What has happened to Spain?
Maybe got complacent? Maybe teams have worked out how to counter Tika-Taka? Ageing players lost a yard of pace?
I know, all clichés, but all quite possibly true to some extent.
Unbelievable result.
Spain outplayed and looking old and tired, all credit to Chile.

This year the league is really unpredictable
3-2-1 BLASTOFF! Suarez or Sturridge to shine? Rooney to prove doubters wrong? Goals galore or a goalless bore?! 8-)
So how was the England game? I spent all 90 minutes trying to get enough internet signal to watch it :(
I guess it paid off betting against my own country. I'm now two pooints from bottom. Japan game next. 'cept I have to go to work where they probably don't have a TV in the office.
It was an entertaining game. Pretty even really, congrats to Rooney for getting his world cup goal, but Saurez was the difference between the side - two excellent finishes. TBH in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, both sides could have scored a couple.
Weird... I've got 13 results right, but only 2 scorelines - both England losing 2-1!!

There's this archaic thing called a Radio that usually sends the matches... ;)
However, if you're anything like me, you won't get much of what they say, but "Gooooooaaaalll" is always very clear about what they mean...
Haha yeah I'll even be surprised of they have a radio on in there. I'll just keep the BBCs text commentary on my phone and look at it when I think no one can see.
Predicting the future is not my thing, I guess, but I'll keep on trying:
Jun-22 1700 Belgium 2 - 1 Russia
Jun-22 2000 South Korea 0 - 0 Algeria
Jun-22 2300 USA 1 - 1 Portugal
Cool cheers Tzachs. I'm still holding out hope that I'll get a nice run of points soon. Remember points are doubled in the next round so that could (I'm hoping) shake things up a bit, so it's worth keeping your hand in.
@Baron. Did you ever decide what you wanna do about that Switzerland France game? Is - - - your official answer or shall I call it nil-nil?
Well I take back what I said. Got to work and they'd actually changed the schedule so the kids, and staff, could watch the second half on some decent-sized tellies. Fair play.
Jun-20 1700 Italy 2 - 1 Costa Rica
Jun-20 2000 Switzerland 1 - 3 France
Jun-20 2300 Honduras 1 - 1 Equador
"On my browser you have to scroll down to even see my name on the list" - Larry Vales
So, a low scoring day all round. Well done to Costa Rica who have beaten two big clubs already and managed to basically knock England out without having even played them yet. Italy were just a little bit crap and chronically off-side. Also, France gave us another big score line that none of us predicted.
Being one of only three people to score 2 points all day, Cat takes a three-point advantage over her nearest rivals, Monkey424 and Sinitrena. Myself and Miguel still biding our time.
But frankly, it's still anyone's game. There's only 10-points between top and bottom, and with points being doubled in the knockout rounds this could go anywhere.
So don't go anywhere!

Jun-21 2300 Nigeria 1 - 1 Bosnia-Herzegovina
This was really unexpected result from Germany with Ghana (roll)
But The Wizard Özil played a great match as always!
It was also a pleasure to see Schweinsteiger play :)
I saw most of the second half, fantastic match! (At least what I saw of it.)
Highlights on BBC Website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27959889)
It was a good game, a real battle for our team as I personally thought it was going to be. Ghana played lightyears better than in their first game, now that their back was against the wall, great play by them. Deserved result, even though we could've made it 3-2 in the end a couple times.
Well, another low-scoring day, which is just a testament to the literally unpredictable nature of some of the results we've been getting. Well done to Ghana for keeping their hopes alive. I'd love to see them sneak into the next round.
Now Germany really has to make an effort when playing against USA. Portugal can finish 2nd on this group if they get their shit together!

Cheers Cat. That's all inputed for you.
I'm thinking of adding some kind of 'wildcard' feature in the knockout stages, where you can choose one game to be your wildcard and score extra points for correct guesses on that game. What does everyone think of this?
PS Khris, I need some more predictions from you, mate.
Damnit, I completely forgot about today's games.
Jun-22 2000 South Korea 1 - 1 Algeria
Jun-22 2300 USA 2 - 1 Portugal
Heh... I'd been thinking of changing my prediction for the South Korea vs Algeria game, really wish I had now! Although, SK have just pulled one back early in the second half, so who knows...
Well in terms of games played we are exactly halfway through the tournament.
Cat now has a three-point lead over her rivals, but she's by no means safe.
This is the last call for new participants. It's still mathematically possible to score 147 points, so it's definitely not to late. Once the next match kicks off though, I'm closing the door.
That is also my designated deadline for the rest of the group stage predictions, so Of you can give me them today, those who haven't, that would be nice, although As there's only a few of you I'm not going to be strict about this.
Also, as this last round of group stage games is being played the final standings will be decided. As soon as a last 16 fixture is decided it will be open for predictions until the game kicks off. I will update the fixture list in the OP accordingly.
Jun-23 1700 Australia 2 - 1 Spain

Oh btw Stupot - I think your "Wildcard" idea is a good one. Just realised no-one's given you feedback on that yet! Although given my terrible record in predicting any scorelines not involving England being beaten 2-1, and that they won't be in it, probably no point even giving me a wildcard! (roll)

Why don't they update?
(using Firefox)
Thanks for predictions Selmiak. Unfortunately, the group D games kicked off long before you posted them. :~(
@Cassie, well spotted. I had only updated one of the two links in the OP when we changed to the new automated spreadsheet. I'm surprised nobody else picked up on this. Should be all fixed now.
Why did Columbia have to go and score that 4th goal?!?!? I could have done with a correct result, having a really bad run atm! (What's with scoring 4 goals anyway? Don't they know their best striker is injured?!)
Wow! How did that happen that I'm in 2nd-3rd place?
I thought all my "predictions" where way off (those that I actually thought would be correct, anyway...) (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/Smileys/AGS/smiley16_rolleyes.gif)
Oh come ON. 42 group matches played, and I've only got 2 scorelines correct. (Why did Argentina have to go and score a third? Can I have half a point for the scoreline being right at 49 minutes?!?)
Jun-28 1700 Brazil 3 - 1 Chile
Jun-28 2100 Colombia 3 - 1 Uruguay
Jun-29 1700 Netherlands 2 - 1 Mexico
Jun-29 2100 Costa Rica 2 - 0 Greece
@ Cap'n, yeah that's too bad, I'm actually quite surprised how low scoring this whole thing is. It's not that we're crap, just that football is a lot more unpredictable than I gave it credit for. I bet if even Alan Hanson or someone had joined in he wouldn't be that far in front, if at all. I've since been and looked at some other online prediction leagues and realised a lot of them do also give points for half-time guesses. That's Also how I got the wildcard idea.
@ Cassie, yeah you're doing well, but who can usurp the Cat prowling at the head of the pride?
@ Khris, thanks for your new predictions.
I'll drop my predictions for the next round anyways now as I'll be off for the weekend and some...
Colombia - vs. - Uruguay: 4:2
Costa Rica - vs. - Greece: 1:0
1 E - vs. - Nigeria: 2:1
1 G - vs. - 2 H: 1:2 :)
Argentina - vs. - 2 E: 1:3
1 H - vs. - 2 G: 2:0 :)
Hehe okay mate. If you do wanna change one or two of them as the teams come through, I'm sure it could be arranged :)
update:
1 G - vs. - 2 H: 2:1 ;)
edit:

Jun-28 2100 Colombia 1 vs 2 Uruguay
Jun-29 1700 Netherlands 2 vs 1 Mexico
Jun-29 2100 Costa Rica 0 vs 1 Greece
wait, can there even be a draw in the last groupphase games?
It's all due to points, then confronts between teams with the same points and then goal averages.
And then coinflip.
and then bareknuckle cagefights...
~I'm really tempted to change my prediction for the Portugal vs Ghana game, but if I do, Portugal will probably win 2-1, which would have scored me 3 points. So I'll leave it unchanged, confident that I have now ensured that it will not end up with that scoreline. :X
Well, it seems that not changing my predication was a good move!!:grin::grin:
Just need Germany and USA to both score a goal before the end of the match and I'll have scored as many points as in the last 4 days put together.

Congrats to Cat for winning the group stage. (nod)
So, we're at the three quarter mark and the end if the group stage. Well done to Cat for managing to maintain top spot for pretty much the duration.
The next round matches are all set, so feel free to make your predictions up until the respective games kick off.
Thanks to those who have already done that.
Remember, only the scores at the time of the normal full time whistle counts. Any extra time or penalties will not be a factor in this prediction league, so even though one team has to get knocked out, feel free to predict a draw.
From now on, points are doubled, so anything can happen.
Also I'm going to go ahead with the wildcard thing so here's how it works:
Every participant (you) have one wildcard. At any point you can use the wildcard if you are particularly confident about your prediction. You can even use it for the final, but the points will be the same, 5 for a correct Result or 10 for a correct score, on top of any other points you earn for that game.
To use it, just write in the forum along with your predictions, or separately is fine, just be clear which game you are using it for, and again, do it before the game starts.
You won't be penalized points for using your wildcard on a wrong prediction, but you will have wasted your wildcard so use it wisely ;-D

Felt so sorry for Chile... that penalty shoot-out was heart-breaking.
I fell asleep and missed both games. Curse this time zone.
Cracking result for Baron though, got just what he needed to knock cat off from her purrrrch...
... What?
Unlucky Cat:~(
Guess it was a good thing I did not used my Wildcard on Brasil game, like I had thought to... :D
Congrats Baron - you were the only one brave enough to plump for Chile getting a draw! (If it weren't for the woodwork... TWICE! - they could have got even more.)
Ah, now it's interesting! No doubt we'll start swapping leaders regularly, though, now that there are a lot more points on the table for each game.
But.... can anyone explain me the deductions? Is that some sort of beauty tax on Khris, Selmiak, monkey and me? :-*
I just want to chime in and say how that every time I see the subject line of this thread I always think that, "AGS World Cup", is some new AGS sports game (like that football game someone was working on years ago) that we all play together through the online plug-in or something. Every time the answer is still the same. Nope :-[

Disturbed to see that I've hurtled down to 10th place in the league table... come on Costa Rica, a nice 2-0 win tonight please!
Unlucky cap'n. You got your extra goal, only the wrong side scored it.
Congrats to Vincent, Cassie and Monkey424 for a perfect day and 12 points each.
Feel free to start giving my your quarter-final predictions. And don't forget your wildcards :-)
Guess this game is as good as any to cast my wildcard, if it's not too late. :)
Jun-30 2100 Germany vs Algeria **Wildcard**
Nope not too late. Consider it cast :-)
I've gotta get get up early tomorrow so might not have time to update any wildcard related scores immediately, but don't panic if there's a delay, I'll be on it like a scotch bonnet.
So far only teams that topped their groups have gone on to win this round of matches. Can Switzerland or USA change that? Only Selmiak seems to think so. A 1-3 win for the Swiss would be a great result for him. I have to apologise to you Selly, too, because I had made an error inputting some of your predictions in the previous round and as a result of my fixing the error you have dropped a couple of points. My bad. But please blame Khris for pointing it out to me (laugh) hehe.

Ixnay on the roupgay opperstay strategy! You're going to give away all my points.... :P ;) There weren't really a lot of close groups, though. Except in Group A (Mexico, Brazil), all the groups had a clear winner (even when points were close, the group winner had clearly beaten the runner up). The next round is going to be much more of a toss-up, which is why I burned my wild-card on the "sure thing" of Germany-Algeria. (roll)
Good luck to everyone on tomorrow's matches (especially if you bet along the same lines as me! ;) )

What are the rules about having a nickname nickname? ;)
Rats!I knew I should have used my Wildcard on the France match! But I was too late for that one, so the Germany one looked to be the next "sure" thing... rats to them for not have scored in the regular time. :p
Haha I never knew of this Celly thing. Selly is my suck-up nickname for Selmiak for ballsing up his score. As for other nickname nicknames I'm pretty sure I've called you Bazza in the past, Baron. Also who hasn't called Bicilotti 'bitch' at some point? :-D
So today is the last two second round matches.
Feel free to start placing your predictions for the quarter-finals games, when you are ready.
Best of luck :-)
Hope I'm not too late:
Wildcard: Jul 1 - 17:00 Argentina - Switzerland
Nope not too late. Thanks, Treen :-D
Contrary to what the sheet may say, Switzerland are not in the quarter finals. Argentina are, but Google docs has suddenly decided to stop saving my changes, probably due to my shite internet. I will change this as soon as I can.

Other than England's performance (and my lack of skill at predictions!), this has been a great world cup so far and that USA v Belgium game was really something special. People say that other leagues can't keep up with the pace of the premier league, but I don't think there are many premiership sides who could have kept up with either team last night.

Thanks for your quarter final guesses so far, guys. Keep them coming.
It's weird that in terms of days we are little over halfway through the competition, but in terms of games we only have 8 left. Still, the scores are close enough that it should be a nail biting final act for our prediction
At this point Baron is lording it up at the top with Vincent and Cassie following closely behind. Cat has been knocked back a few whiskers, but is still scratching at the door of victory. There are just 26 points between top and bottom. But with 51 points still on the table (plus wildcards) the true prediction master could be any one of us.
Who will reign supreme, and who will be condemned to the cesspit of last place?
I'm working on some trophies and will announce them properly soon :-)

With my wife being from the US they were my second team this year and last night they provided me with the heroic failure of a knockout stage defeat that was robbed from me by England. I'll be down at Sixfields next season dressed in my Teddy Goalsevelt outfit chanting 'I believe...'. Ridicule and abuse will no doubt follow.

What was that with all the draws in the previous round? They really have to work for their money (120').
Yeah good point. I counted 8 draws in the first 48 games and then 5 in the next 8.
That's a jump from 1/6 to 5/8 which is actually quite a big jump.
If I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd wonder if there wasn't some sort of backstage shenanigans going on, making the games last longer. After all, longer games means longer exposure time for the sponsors logos and presumably that equals more money for Fifa.... Hmmm
Going for even more draws...
Jul-04 1700 France 1 - 1 Germany
Jul-04 2100 Brazil 1 - 1 Columbia
Jul-05 1700 Argentina 0 - 0 Belgium

5-Jul Netherlands 1 - 0 Costa Rica
how did I end up losing 8 points?
And I somehow missed what the wildcard does and how many you have, anyone still remember where in the thread this is?
Hi Selmiak. The 8 point deductions are just from predictions that were not received or too late. You had missed those two early ones, then I had no predictions for the 4 games on the 23rd, then on the 24th you gave me that nice long list but the first two games on it were nearly finished at the time you posted them so I couldn't include them. Sorry dude.
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=50576.msg636491286#msg636491286
As for the wildcards, everybody gets only one, and it wins you 5 bonus points for a correct 'result' and 10 for a correct 'score'. Just tell me which game you want to be your wildcard. It can be one you've already predicted today or any future game.
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=50576.msg636491442#msg636491442
P.S. Thanks Selmiak and Tzachs and everyone. All quarter-final predictions are in. This time tomorrow we'll know our first two semi-finalists.
Way to go Vincent! 12 points for the day.
Also well done to Haggis, Cassie and Cat for securing 6 points each.
How were the games? I was sound asleep during them.
Still nobody's wildcards have proven fruitful. I also wasted my own.
Excuse the big gap on the spreadsheet between Tzachs and Cassie. My finger slipped and I inadvertently inserted 7 columns, and I can't undo the action in this phone app, so I have to wait till I get to a real computer to undo it. Doesn't seem to have affected the maths though :-)

Are you talking about the English Premier League? Because if so, then I'm pretty sure the only people that would say that are English! ;)
Apart from having too many teams on their own Premier League, British teams (if they qualify) have to play their league games, 2 internal cup games and also European matches. Well that's no more matches than the Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and the list goes on through all championships of UEFA. I think that everybody that follows football knows that the Premiere League is the most fast-paced league in the...well, world. At the same time it is a fact that faster teams don't necessary win competitions.
1983-84, Liverpool won the European Cup and it took 15 other years for Manchester United to win it. Liverpool got it back in 2005 and then both Man U and Chelsea have won it. So, that's 5 Champions League titles in 30 years.
In my opinion English football is overrated in "quality" although its appeal and wonder is undeniable. It's crazy the amount of money it's paid over there for players that earn 20 times less in their original clubs.
Fast-paced doesn't always equal quality, but it usually equals excitement. I don't think the whole league is that fast paced really... Maybe once upon a time, but these days teams are increasingly too careful when they take the lead so rather than going for more goals they just dig their heels in, bring in more defenders and pass to each other for the rest of the game, killing any pace or excitement, while the team who are behind start flopping about and rolling around trying desperately to get a penalty or free kick. It's sad to see and I've become increasingly bored of English football the past few years now.
That said, there is usually enough decent material to make it worth watching Match of the Day on a Saturday night, but I'm less inclined to sit through a whole game these days unless it's a big derby or relegation battle.

There was an amazing goal from David Luiz to free kick, I would recommend you to watch it if you have not already done
Unfortunately, I have not seen the game of germany :-\
But they are just a GREAT team
Well played Khris. Full-house for the day.
Also well done again to Cat for another 6.
And well done to me! For being the only player so far to benefit from his or her wildcard. Only the 5 but it brings me out of the "relegation zone" for now, finally :-D
What a terrible round for me! 0 out of 4!
And to think I was one goal away from getting the correct results for each of those matches...
Oh well...
8-Jul Brazil 0 - 1 Germany
9-Jul Netherlands 1 - 0 Argentina
Uhm, this is hard now... I would like to bias and say Germany runs with the title, on the other hand I would rather see Brazil get it...
Now there's 4 great teams, and I have no idea about how the games will/can turn out.
Anyways...
8-Jul Brazil 1 - 1 Germany
9-Jul Netherlands 0 - 1 Argentina
This is amazing - the final could potentially be two of the big rivalries! Net Vs Ger or Bra vs Arg!

We've been relegated to the 'rumpus league' (nod)
Not quite sure why, after being a mainstay of top flight discussion for most of season. The ref wasn't even watching the ball, but he blew his whistle anyway and we have been penalized. Oh well, we have a strong, dedicated 14-man (and woman) squad who will keep giving 110% up until the final game. At the end of the day, you know, it's a game of two halves, and well, I know my team is behind me and appreciate the effort I've put into developing this squad alongside my assistant coach, and we won't take this decision personally.
It's been moved over here because it's primarily a forum game/activity, not a discussion (I originally left it alone because I looked at it around Page 5, when it was more chatty). And as I keep telling people, being moved here is not a "relegation" or a "penalty": The Rumpus Room is just a good a board as General Discussion, they just serve different purposes.
Perhaps the board descriptions need an update.

Brazil 1 vs 0 Germany
Netherlands 1 vs 2 Argentina

Jul-08 2100 Brazil 1 vs 2 Germany
Jul-09 2100 Netherlands 0 vs 0 Argentina
So difficult to call, but will hopefully be as entertaining to watch as most of the rest of the tournament.
What is this madness that I am watching...
Use football on goal...
Use football on goal...
repeat...
Brazil have clearly exhausted all the dialogue options and are still stuck. They're going to have to use a walkthrough.
Germany however have completed the game and are playing through it again for fun testing all the inventory interaction responses for laughs.
>Use football on Neuer.

>Use football on Fred.

This World Cup belongs to Germany, I believe. :)

Also well done to Ghost on his free can of Ravioli :-)
It sounds extremely silly when you put it that way, but also incredibly funny (laugh) Thanks for that!
Congratulations to Germany! Best team won! Khris and Ghost do celebrate with moderation please!
Thanks Stupot and Khris for this fun competition!
By the way, the European Qualifying phase is just near that corner...

It
was fun! ;-D
I know even less about it than football, but there
is some sort of World Tournament of Ultimate Frisbee (http://www.worlds2014.org/) coming up in early August, if anyone is interested in another go.... ;)
Congrats Vincent! This was a fun contest - thanks Stupot+ for hosting it.

I'm in! That Woman Masters Trophy got my attention!
Ciao CaptainD, Grazie
Well done Vincent and everyone else who took part. Just like a certain Portuguese number 7 I came into this tournament with dreams of personal glory, only to shame myself with performances of absolute mediocrity.
This has been a great World Cup and I was happy to see Germany win.
The only downside is that it's caused a relapse of my long standing Champo/Football Manager addition...
Yay, second!
Thanks, Stupot for organising this, it was fun!
YAY!
Thanks Stu for hosting this!
Fun fact: if Germany had scored within the regular time, the top four wouldn't have changed.
Also I'm severely hungover.
Yay, I managed to avoid relegation. ;-D
Congrats Vincent for being the league champion!
And Stupot+ for hosting, it was fun!
coangrats to vincent, cat and cassiebsg! And to the german team! YAY!
thanks to stu and khris for hosting this and thanks to miguel for taking last place so I am not on the last place :-D
Didn't I already predict that Germany was going to win? I even watched first half of the match for Germany solely. ;)
Also, regarding predictions for other sports, please sign me up if anyone of you ever decides to host the same for Cricket World Cup. (I thought English people were actually interested in Cricket. No?
