The AGS Panel is a team of AGS forum veterans who play all of the games here, and give them ratings from one to five cups. The rating system is as follows:
1 Cup Not serious entertainment
2 Cups A reasonable game, worth a try
3 Cups A good game, worth playing
4 Cups A great game, well worth your time
5 Cups An outstanding, must-play game!
Feel free to disagree with the panel's rating, and please don't be offended if you think your game has been underrated!

(Why has my game been rated 1 cup?)

Close window
If your game has been rated 1 cup, please don't be offended! It's common for your first game release to get a 1-cup rating, due to the game having a lack of polish and flair -- which is understandable, because you're just getting started!

Please understand that the main purpose of the ratings is to help potential game players find high quality, bug-free games to play. You've probably learnt a lot about AGS as a result of making your first game -- so why not use that knowledge to start afresh, and do even better with your next game!

About this game

Winner of the sixth One Room One Week competition.

The investigation of a wave of kidnappings is going nowhere. One day someone claiming to be an eyewitness to one of the kidnappings approaches the local police department. It's time to find out what he knows...

AGS Panel Review

"As an experiment in motion capture in the tradition of Another World, By the Numbers shows an exceptional amount of effort on the part of the author. This effort shines through in the various facial features and lip synching of the characters, though it comes at a price: the narrative itself is very gameplay-light and the ending can often be confusing even when you think you've made all the right choices. Overall, though, By the Numbers is a solid example of what can be achieved in just seven days with AGS and some assorted tools."

If you try to play it as is, you might notice the audio doesn't sync up correctly. I solved this by using DxWrapper, which you can find here on GitHub: https://github.com/elishacloud/dxwrapper

When you download it, you will want to add dxwrapper.dll, dxwrapper.ini, and ddraw.dll from the "Stub" folder to the folder where the game is located. Make sure you open up winsetup.exe and set the graphics driver to DirectDraw 5. You can use up to 2x nearest-neighbour filter, anything past that might not work.

Once that's done, open up dxwrapper.ini in NotePad or your favorite text editor, and you will need to change a few options. You will need to change the 0 in the following lines into a 1 in order to enable them:

Once that is done, the game should run without any speed issues, and you will be able to enjoy one of the coolest games made in AGS. Happy gaming!

Wow! A rather tense investigation. It can be quite hard to figure out if you are asking the right questions, but I suppose that is true to real life. I wish there were more games like this :)

The animation really is something; it even manages to be quite subtle sometimes. I felt the interrogator's voice acting wasn't great, and it somewhat distracted from the experience. The story was alright; nice atmosphere and use of music.

Still, definitely worth it for the animation alone.

Only just got around to playing this just now.
I certainly see what all the fuss is about!

I have to say when I saw this game I figured it would be interesting and interesting it was! It reminds me of the upcoming game L.A.Noir the way the animation goes with the audio almost seamlessly.

Nice dub and animating ...
This is a quite impressive technical short story.

But lowerside is that your 2D drawings look really worse than your 3D animation.

Very impressive as a tech demo + solid voice acting and intense atmosphere. And all created within a week! Not really a game though.

So now I demand a huge, amazingly playable game using this mo-cap/vector technology!

Awesome visuals and atmosphere. Although I didn´t really get what I was doing and it seemed to be more an interactive movie than a game, it was a great experience. And the graphical style is certainly worth to be used for a longer game.
